VTY now have a sizeable partnership division, so im guessestimating the market may see that
as less cyclical, as we slide in to recession.
There's the story and then there's the numbers and, of the two, I prefer to rely on the numbers....
I don't wish to pee on anyone's bonfire, and especially as I don't recall ever commenting here on the Bovis share chat before, so I suppose that makes me the cheeky new upstart, so I'll just put some numbers out instead.
But firstly, and perhaps controversially, I tend to ignore declared EPS figures, and instead use BVPS, adjusted for goodwill and intangibles, at start and finish of the accounting period, and adjusted for any dividends paid, in order to find out what the true earnings were based on increase in tangible value.
Because it's that which is going to count when it comes to calculating PBV, and I consider PBV to be a steadier measuring stick than year to year earnings given the seriously cyclical nature of house builder profitability based on any long term historical record...
Anyway, on that basis, balance sheet value of Bovis as at 30/6/20 being £2,118.831m less £736.305 intangibles (in various guises) gives net balance sheet of £1,382.526m divided by 217.828m shares in issue at the end of the period = 634.69p BVPS.
Calculated on the above basis, the brought forward BVPS as at 1/1/20 was 840.17p, so that gives a loss calculated as above of 205.48p.
If any of the above numbers are wrong, I'm happy to stand corrected - but the above no doubt seems way out of whack with the story otherwise presented...?
So, perhaps take a longer perspective to see if it seems valid.... I'll leave people to decide for themselves...
Including an estimated figure for 2020, and using the above process for EPS and book value each year, Bovis's average return on equity for the years 2013 to 2020 inclusive is 5.7%.
This compares to Bellway - the share I use as a benchmark - which has average ROE for the same period of 18.9%, i.e. more than three times as much as Bovis.
And this has been reflected in share price performance.... since 2013, with divs reinvested on the day received, Bovis has returned investors 45% overall whereas Bellway has returned 186%.
Go back even further, Bovis average return on equity 1998 to 2019 is 12.2% compared to Bellway's 17.4%....
The gap perhaps seems somewhat smaller, but compounding impacts more on the difference over the longer time scale....
In 1998, Bovis had a book value per share of 185p, pretty much the same as Bellway's at 183p in that year.
However, scroll forward to 2019, and Bovis's BVPS is then 855p compared to Bellway's 2,373p.
And yet, despite all the above, the two of them are currently selling at pretty much the same price to book value....!

All house builders down - worries about a 'hard Brexit' being quoted.
Earnings below market expecations, and a loss at the half way mark - not something to be too excited about. Good news is there's no rights issue or major land writedowns etc Full year earnings maybe around 34p (unadjusted) and for 2021 they say "Assuming stable pricing and current sales rates and productivity levels .... adjusted PBT 310m +". A lot of caveats but good luck to them, at least they are giving some indication and we can make our own guesses about whether pricing will be stable or not and adjust accordingly.
How is this not up today?!
Could not have expected better. Confidence underpinned by record forward sales position.
Signalling the return to divi payments, hopefully the market will react positively and can return this to the more realistic levels it deserves to be at
Just keep putting £200 a month in here and 4 others every month in my share isa. Think it could easily be worth double in 18 months.
Half year 8th September.
I think it fair to say that recent updates/results from builders have been well-received. Vistry's are unlikely to prove differently.
There is a lot of water to go under the bridge until, say, next spring. and there is no doubt that the first half has suffered due to Covid, and the update makes it plain that that will be reflected in next results. But they were looking to an improving second half. We shall see if they remain positive about that and the signs of an improving situation on the last update.
I still think there is a big shock to come , due to current mortgage restrictions - but what do I know ..
That was officially a trading update. "Given the present economic uncertainty, short-term financial guidance remains suspended. We will provide a further update with our Half Year results in September."
Half year results have already been anounced in july, next is year end jan 2021 3rd q wil be end of oct
Is anyone buying at the moment? Half year results due in couple of weeks. Persimmon peaked 14% up in the week prior to their results last week, hoping for similar (or better) from vistry.
I can only generalise. Some builders will fare better than others, no doubt, dividends, what have you. My interest is a simplistic one and lies in sp advancement across the industry, over time, however long it takes.

All we know is they have it under consideration, following the bonus issue - "The Board recognises the value of dividends to shareholders and will consider this in its future dividend strategy." Perhaps we shall learn more next month.
Though in common with most there is no short term financial guidance, the company seems quite confident with its relative prospects, in particular arising from Vistry Partnerships, as summarised in the last report.
Hi Everyone, I've been looking to add this into my longer term portfolio (10 years +) and wondered your general feelings around dividends (one of the criteria for this portfolio). From what I can see, these have been fairly consistent for the last 6 years (although poor 2008 - 13). Thank you
It should tick up now slowly slowly , alot of interest in this share. it is currently undervalued in my opinion. Needs to get in to the 700's again and we can build a base from there
Price fall, the SP now needs to Double to get back to the early Feb level.

SP doesn't always go up according to what goes on on the ground and is influenced by so many unpredictable factors like sentiment,etc but I hope u turn up to be right!

I worked on a vistry site up until two weeks ago.
Just finished the last houses , getting ready now for a big push lots of sites about to start around us and most will be affordable housing, so I am expecting a busy winter.
Covid has put a few things back a couple of months, but I think we will be in for a busier twelve months than most other HB as our contracts were already signed off with the HAs.
So I’m expecting the price to fly in the next couple of months!

It would seem the MMs are intent on walking it down and there is sod all you can do about it. Bought yesterday afternoon at 708p. Several hundred down in 1 day. Markets are a farce!
