As a long standing shareholder, loyalty at last paying off.. Rise in sp , in my view, nothing to do with a take-over as some are hoping for.
...seems the CEO is indeed doing exactly what the Analysts have been asking for, along with news that impairments from China have almost finished ....hence some good support today
Agree. Lagging behind peers this year. A lot more to come here
I would expect to see some pretty hefty Broker Upgrades on the back of these results.
A further share buyback could also follow at HY results.
" Operating income up 17% to $5.2bn, up 20% at constant currency (ccy); up 14% at ccy excluding two notable items of $234m reported in Treasury and Other products
Wealth Solutions up 23% at ccy
Underlying profit before tax of $2.1bn, up 27% at ccy; reported profit before tax of $1.9bn, up 8% at ccy
Underlying earnings per share (EPS) increased 15.3 cents or 41% to 52.9 cents; Reported EPS increased 5.8 cents or 14% to 46.5 cents"
The Analysts will like : as these were concerns previously ...
1. We have taken action to create a simpler and more efficient organisation
2. Income-to-cost jaws positive in the quarter

"$5 billion profit each year "
that is pre tax ...
2022 - post tax profit of $2.547 billion for Ordinary shareholders
2023 - post tax profit of $3.017 billion for Ordinary shareholders
Since 1 Jan 2019 $6 billion of share capital has been bought back. I know many think share buy backs are a waist of money but buying back shares at these low prices really makes sennse. In time the share price will go up.
$5 billion profit each year is now being divided up amongst fewer shareholders. The P/E ratio is 6.5 or so. Something eventually will have to give.
I am optimistic. If I had to buy 1 FTSE share to hold for 2 to 6 years this would be it. Given that $1 billion is being bought back and a furthet $1 billion second half. I do expect the share price to increase this year. 14.1% tier 1 ratio is better than expected. Bil Winters is creating a real cash machine here. With the massive share buy backs and the continued good results sooner or later the share price will shoot up. I am not selling my shares for less than £10. I may be the last man standing.

STAN 26/2/24
Berenberg upped its price target on 'buy' rated Standard Chartered on Monday to 1,050p from 1,000p as it said that growth and returns are undervalued. Berenberg said the 2023 results last week "provided clear confirmation that recent improvements in the bank's returns can be sustained".
"Importantly, revenues and net interest income (NII) can grow even as interest rates fall. The bank's commitment for FY 2026 expenses to be below USD12bn also provides an antidote to investors' concerns about cost control," it said. "Our underlying EPS for Standard Chartered increases by 2-3%," Berenberg said, adding that reductions to its statutory earnings instead reflect planned restructuring costs.
May take some time to get that high !

Well they have given what the shareholders were looking for , and the writedown in the Bohai stake was smaller than anticipated , and may now have bottomed out ...which is what HSBA were suggesting
Still questions about potential break up of divisions and the road to greater profitability .. but.. it was definitely over sold on bearish worries ...so..pleasing to see that shown and an uptick out of that
Asia definitely has good potential to come good 2025-6

HSBC Results today -
"$3bn charge linked to the lender’s stake in the Bank of Communications in China, where lenders are struggling with a downturn in the country’s real estate market.
That was despite CEO Quinn having suggested last quarter that China had experienced the worst of the crisis.
“I did say last quarter that I thought the market had bottomed. I still believe that,” he told a press briefing on Wednesday morning. “I also said last quarter that it will take a few years for the market to work its way through the current challenges. So I didn’t say challenges were over.
“But I did believe the activity levels in the commercial real estate market, the valuations in the commercial real estate market in mainland China had bottomed, and that what I saw was a progressive and gradual recovery in the market.”
“Indeed, in the group’s own outlook, HSBC is forecasting slow growth for the first half of the year, followed by a gradual recovery, while inevitably the parlous state of the Chinese economy in general and the real estate sector in particular are ominous headwinds.”
It is cheap on many metrics , but I suspect the market is watching for any further credit impairments including China CRE

Actually looking back the bid would have been £25bn-£29bn in Feb/Apr last year based on dollar exchange rate 66%~93% higher than todays rates.
Okay, china has deteriorated but with government throwing liquidity into the system hopefully todays price is still attractive
Aren’t we surely a takeover target at this level?
Bid considered at £7 plus less than a year ago. I wouldn’t be surprised to see news on this soon.

Standard Chartered Plc is considering restructuring its institutional banking arm, the unit that houses the firm’s investment bankers and traders, as part of the latest effort by Chief Executive Officer Bill Winters to improve the lender’s returns.
The lender has been weighing options including separating its investment bank from its corporate and commercial banking operations, according to people familiar with the matter.
The move could lead to job cuts and is one of several possibilities being weighed with no final decisions made yet, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing matters still under consideration.
A spokesman for Standard Chartered declined to comment.

Standard Char. goes ex 6c dividend 22 Feb. so they could well rise approaching.
Also they might recover in share price after they have appointed a replacement Chairman. They are intent on boosting the share price. It's unusual in today's market conditions for the share price to be below £6.

OSB (one savings bank) is on a PE of 3 and returns 25% per year!! Amazing update today. See @baroninvestment post on X
This has been cut in half then cut in half again since 2016, just shocking even by dog index of the world ftse 100 standards brexit basket case U.K. just uninvestable…..capital destructive rubbish throughout index. Better off in T bills, take the easy money with no capital risk, if the Chinese property market keeps on tanking these are sub 4 quid. Terminal. I bought these at 11 quid and dumped them in a stop loss at a tenner thank god….hadn’t checked them for ages but no real surprise. Repurposed the money into Amzn at 70 bucks.
Those H1 results did look strong and the share price now the same, finished up on ex-div today, looking good. Pardon me here if I shout C'mon STAN.
The best news is that SC exceeded analysts pre tax profit expectations by USD 0.14bn. Hoping it should continue rising.
They look good to me but its all about performance versus expectation. The shares have had a good run in the last three months and there may be some disappointed investors who expected more and want out. My quick appraisal is that, operationally, all is going in the right direction and with a 50% hike in the dividend and further share buy-backs I shall not be selling my holding.

A picture can save a lot of words.
Plus the standout feature here is the likely gap fill to 775
https://invst.ly/10u73b
For those with short memories, the gap was created on 3rd March by the global banking crisis at the time.
Pardon? Me no speaky gibberish very nicingly, even with my double bottom and dancing candles. Or was that dancing men with the double top?
Sp, today broke above small body doji, high price on both weekly and daily charts, which is bullish. If the trough of 31/5/23, is used to define a straight line to the most recent dip, there are parallel lines that can be drawn on the upper and lower limits of price action , which is bullish. The sp, is above the separate major up trendline, which is below the lower Bollinger band. Unfortunately there is overhead supply at 700, which related to previous price action. Overhead supply would be expected to soak up bullish volume, to slow progress upward.

It is soon time for F A B to decide, under Stock Exchange rules, whether to bid for SC . Suggest now may be the time as we in the Snooker world say to "fill your boots"..

Actually you are wrong about the volume. Considering the 2.89 billion shares in issue and usual volume levels. The volume going through is just normal.
It's encouraging there hasn't been a bigger fall-off.
Short lived. Still pocket money for the weekend. Will keep watching and may get a re entry.

Isn’t that the law though? You’ve got to wait a certain time before you can launch another bid? They couldn’t realistically say they are could they?

Despite their denial, I still think FAB will make an offer some time during 2023. SC is very cheap by any measure, and it meets a lot of FAB's ambitions by buying it.
I suspect the results of SC will be stellar this year, 21 Feb announcing, with a big shareholder give away.
Buy backs and divis.
Fingers crossed they don't get this for anything under a tenner. It's worth a lot lot more though.
Starting to look like a done deal except for the Regulatory issues. Has to be at least £10 a share otherwise the Company is given away.
