RE: Verizon and Oculus11 May 2020 10:06
Morning, The cameras for Verizon UP content in 2018 are identical to one of MVR's older cameras which also have the flashing lights, does this mean MVR recorded the Verizon content? Maybe but maybe not, as suggested its likely Verizon subcontracted this work and they could also be using off the shelf hardware.
Camera history, been invested for 3 years and this is from memory so excuse me if it is a bit cloudy:
-They have had at the least 4 different types of cameras ranging from custom made (maybe earlier days) through to what looks exactly like GoPro fusions/Max's for some of their recent content like Capaldi.
- Early early years of MVR they had to use custom cameras because they had issues on set from the heat of lights etc, this has been mentioned from AM and SH in past interviews.
-Speaking to SH at the last AGM he mentioned they have had cameras with custom parts from Blackmagic Design, I believe from memory this may have been the lenses for the latest live stream cameras, the large rectangular ones with two large lenses each side they used for Payne, Wireless and GMA. Also the live cameras needed to be much more weather resistant for out door content.
- All of MVR's cameras are filming in 2D monoscopic (Flat/No 3D efffect in VR headsets) 360 video. Important because A. its far more cost effective for the hardware, post processing the content, stitching footage, lower bandwidth requirments for streaming etc and B. can be viewed on many more devices such as mobile phone etc without the requirement for a headset like stereoscopic would require. Downside is the content does not immerse you as well like NEXTVR's 180 3D footage. Just an example, not to spark a NextVR debate!!!
That brings me onto Oculus Venues, Very much designed for use with 180 3D stereoscopic cameras recording the content as they have created what is essentially a grand stand where you are looking in one direction rather than being individually in the centre of the content looking around. This gives that 3D depth element to what you are looking at in venues, MVR's content would be like looking at a flat 2D cinema screen in venues, not the point of the app! So for that reason alone I don't think we will see MVR's content in Venues unless they move to different cameras which I don't think they will for now as I mentioned the monoscopic/steroscopic trade offs. Venues as you have seen can have footage recorded by any contractor just like supersphere are doing right now with Wiz and Capaldi and other companies have done in the past for one off streams.
