Surely Not? Best Buy to launch early… and bid for DSGi? By Andy Dawson Big fat cigar-chomping Yank electrical retailers Best Buy are coming to the UK – and even though there’s no planes and everyone is contemplating a return to a rustic, non-electric lifestyle, it’s going to happen sooner than we thought. They’ve brought forward the opening date of their first store, in Thurrock, Essex to Friday 30th April – a week earlier than originally announced. They’re promising a ‘four-day launch festival’ with amazing deals and no doubt, some party poppers and balloons. As it stands, Best Buy, who are operating in the UK in conjunction with Carphone Warehouse, plan to open between 70 and 80 UK stores by 2013. Or do they? Speculation in the financial press (well, the Mail) suggests that Best Buy have put together a shopping list of potential acquisitions… with DSGi at the top of the list. Rather than take on the Currys and PC World competition, could Best Buy just be plotting to buy them out? The Mail believes that a friendly £2.2 billion bid could be in the offing. Now what do you all think about THAT sack of plums?

I'm assuming that the mobile phone side of the business will fade into the background. As you clearly know Best Buy run their US operations with ruthless efficiency and I believe they will steamroller electrical stores such as Dixons and Comet with their approach to profits and business. In my view within 18 months Best Buy will have a large slice of the UK entertainment and electric goods market. This will reflect in the price of CPW. I've enjoyed your banter. .....who Best Buy are? In the States they are a leading retailer on all things electrical. Best Buy are just starting to open stores in the UK. In fact they are launching their UK strategy on Monday. I believe that their ambitions are so great that in order to establish themselves quickly in the UK they might even make a take over bid for existing electrical stores such as Dixons. (The cost of doing this would be small change to Best Buy) If Best Buy take off inevitably CPW will rise significantly. Boards such as this are all about opinions. I think yours is as valid as mine. In my view, a short term target of 250p for CPW is very achievable. You think getting out is the best strategy. The next few weeks will tell. ATB VCB

If I Pod exclusivity is mentioned in the strategy announcement by Best Buy the percentage increase in CPW could reach double figures.

What have you done to the Gods? First NPH - now this. I've been watching progress here daily as I'm looking to enter once the NPH farce ends. I was happy to come in at 2p, now I'll be hoping for entry at 1.75. Seriously - things can only get better for us both surely? BW-VCB

Good summary of what happened today. Sadly because of limited access to my computer thought Johnny's RNS post to be real and sold. ( Stupidly and in reaction to holding when Woolies went down.) Lost 2K. However, there are a lot of good sensible characters on the board, you and Izzy included. Have learned an expensive lesson today.

I think your behaviour today on this board was an outrage. I only have fleeting access to my computer during the day and use lse watchlist to keep in touch with developments. As a result of seeing your post I actually sold because I feared a repeat of Woolworths when I suffered major losses. This board surely is for serious like minded adults who wish to exchange tips and views. Your action destroyed not only my day but my investment too.

Izzy - cross at very immature behaviour from myself this morning - I kept chasing the rise and got in at 12.50p. I know you bought at similar price. Do you think we will come out with 100% on this one., or will it disappoint and the 'bids' no materialise into firm deals?

Izzy - we meet again. Tried to buy this all morning, starting at 7p. Finally bought at 12.48. Did we catch the tail end or will this continue to rise? Thoughts anyone?
