RE: Question for the LTH's: Trailing stop losses, who uses them?9 Jan 2026 17:13
@Capitilzer - I'm very cynical about stop losses as I think, once places, the MM can temporarily shift the SP downwards to hoover up the trigger points before then moving the SP quickly to a new level
It happened to me many moons ago at Melrose and I also got stopped out of Ocado last year (they dropped the SP to hoover up my stop loss at £3.35 before immediately releasing the share - it hit about £3.90 shortly afterwards).
I think it's right to be nervous when you are sat on a large gain - but at the same time you need to remind yourself of when you were trapped (especially thinking about Capita) with a large loss.
I remember being £100k under water here back in January 2025 but now I'm £200k up but I'm holding firm because £200k profit doesn't compensate me for how I felt when I was £100k down!
At the end of the day you could take the view that stop/loss is a traders tool (to stop them losing all their capital when a trade goes against them) ....
As a LTH - do I really need to be stopped out when I am certain this will come good in the end whatever the wider market does short term?
If course - last summer I was over £100k up and watched it all disappear in a puff of smoke after August results - but - as I said - it came back better and stronger in the end.
I don't see Schroders or Staverly using stop / losses so I don't either!
