Yep, without BESS, would the company have lasted this long? Probably not.
From a purely ideological standpoint Tidal Stream is an absolute no brainer, no fuel costs, highly predictable (which many renewables are sadly not), no emissions, no significant environmental impacts. I think that even the NIMBYs in the MeyBESS action group on FB, that like to demonise every technological innovation aimed at mitigating climate change whilst keeping the lights on would struggle to find fault.
But at it's nascent stage, it is still deemed to be a risky investment and needs the government support through progressive policy and we've had the bare minimum or less. For me there are a lot of similarities with offshore wind in it's early days, it was thought to be too expensive to ever be truly viable and competitive, but it did get support from the government and look at it now, and tidal has an added advantage in the predictability.
