Hello Vas.. First thing that springs to my mind is money. Telefonica got the contract and probably deadlines. Northern got RF straight away. Southern run cellular which may be was not so reliable but Governments can be hoodwinked, look at the other big concerns rubber stamped by Government, so it was push on regardless. I understand from the horses mouth or at least the reins that we did not feature in SMETS1, what did I do not know. <br />Never read everything into documents. Remember year upon year of pilots and who ever gets them gets contract then along comes EESL, no further reference to pilots, so much for that.

Hello Chianti.. The trouble is most of information on here one way or other revolves around speculation. CC, and I take it Connode were not involved in SMETS1 so to upgrade to SMETS2 would probably involve a re visit. Regardless of what has been printed requirements are changing all of the time via Parliament and Ofcom resulting in DCC taking careful steps forward. I am working on the facts that I know, we were not involved in SMETS1 and will be in all SMETS2 (dormant if not needed). Whereas your readings say we will not be in any SMETS2 that does not require us. It will be interesting to see the outcome.

Hello Chianti. Had further read, logic tells me that if you have cellular+mesh and cellular (+ mesh free) then the combined would be jumped at. JC says the software is only worth pennies until used. I recon JC has made a proposal to CEO DCC and the CEO has said -- why didn't you say that before.

Explain to me in your terms the difference between SBCH and DBCH from the point of can SMETS2 go in both, especially if it is free. Also does the software in Mysore go through a Hub or is it just in with the meter software.
And the blind shall see.

As a layman I could not really see the initial cost problem as, like Mysore, with immediately returns coming in then all the works, especially the lower leasing costs, would have paid for the lot in say 3 years. The so-called infrastructure is RF in the box and DCU's who then seek normal comms links to Control Room. The advantages are a better permanent connection and better security. Retrofit would probably pose a problem at they dictated that all fittings must be inside the meter.
Regarding SBCH v DBCH, they have certainly made it complicated. If they had gone for RF from outset I presume that we would not have these Hubs and it would just have been software inside the meter.
I had it from a very reliable source that CC was going to be in all SMETS2 so a question mark on SBCH/DBCH.

Thanks LTI, those were my thoughts without getting so deep when colour said meters were basic and virtually 'read only'. So perhaps Government has overridden EESL and requires all electricity meters to be 'smart' to meet their expectations for 'Smart India' and have control over Command and Control/Supply and Demand. If they cannot upgrade these meters to smart I wonder if they will ask CC about Retrofit as they have enough to do without replacements. May have this all wrong.

Chianti, anything is doable but just cannot see it. SMETS1 is being replaced because it is not interoperable, if it can be corrected then why not push on and correct all SMETS1. Why go to all this fuss to create SMETS2 Just not logical.
I understand they are different.. From the Government wording they were working on it.

I would suggest that JC approaches the Government, BEIS, InnovateUK etc. It is definitely in their interest to fund and they are independent.

The Sweden contract among the friends of Connode will prove to be a massive opening into the area. In most cases it's the links to other Countries/Utilities that count. If we don't get a shot across the bows regarding trade with Iran I see that being a massive contract, part of 32m meters and the over the boarder spread into surrounding countries. A lot of extra thought is being given to UK situation from above and I see massive opportunities there. Too many massives and repeating myself.

Give up 2cv.. I don't know what level ITT came in at but he is determined to rubbish CC to his dying day.
We will now have a trickle>steam>river in the coming 1 to 2 years. New comers will be pleased.
JC made reference again to ARM (sold at £28bn), took them 20 years but they were doing OK from about 10 years on.
I think CC will make good money out of UK Contract and give themselves an international name. JC will need to concentrate on seeing that gets a successful and rapid conclusion and take on any opportunities offered to them by BEIS, OFGEM and DCC.

Very pleased that JC is feeding in any size of order to RNS and will hopefully continue on a regular basis. It's the only way to spread the word and be seen as progressive, not a cash cow which has now passed.
If possible I would like a further update from JC on UK. After the first estimate of £25/£37m. any increase must be a fillip to the contract. As it is a sealed deal now would be the ideal time to give us the up-to-date nuts and bolts, apart from us the rest of the country would appreciate it. This is still the biggest signed contract in the world I believe.

SMETS is under close scrutiny from Parliament and The Lords who are looking for results.
I feel, only feel, that DCC will open dialogue with CC. I don't know if DCC knew the full capabilities of CC previously.
Reading about different Hubs, aerials etc. it would seem logical to me to adopt one simple system. CC RF is proven, 100% reliable, low priced, can all be fed into DCC on one independent secure system (GCHQ), if I was the Director of DCC that's the way I would go to get back schedule.

Vas, I perhaps extracted the 30% from JC's update relating to 70% coverage.
JJess.. Don't know what Ofcom actually means, may be connections by other means (RF) to their systems, they only have to make the connections by tests in areas. In the House of Lords the debate was not around those sort of figures as they seem almost perfect and we know that is not the case..
