RE: Apologies9 Oct 2021 15:41
Alias Smith, I was most interested in your posts and I personally think no apology is necessary - except perhaps to Barnet for the phrase "a fool and his money....". Barnet, you should listen to Alias; he has huge experience and is successful. His age at 63 is a positive. I cannot see anything in Alias's posts to suggest he is giving a false biography. On the contrary, Barnet, his posts seem to me to be honest and generous in the sharing of his knowledge. I myself am 62 and I think my experience has made me into a better investor. When I say better, I mean I was a complete fool to start with back in the late 90's. I am merely less foolish today.
I am overweight in RIO and BP at the moment. Alias, I would suggest that timing is also important when I consider your phrase "let your winners run and cut your losers". For example, being quite contrarian in my strategy, I look at cycles driven by both sentiment and macroeconomic realities. For example, sometime in late 2015 I decided that the BP share price was ridiculously low and I bought and held. I took profit sometime in 2018 and continued to hold some but got hammered again by April 2020. I've been buying back in since Spring of this year and my strategy is to sell, possibly by early next year. BP is on a run at the moment.
It takes wisdom to know when a 'winner' is no longer on the run and when it becomes a 'loser'. I see your strategy, Barnet in selling Rio because of all the noise from the Chinese market and the collapse of iron ore price. But I see this as an opportunity to buy China and buy iron ore and all commodities. China is a global engine of growth that has seen a lot of negative sentiment due to regulation and Evergrande and all that jazz. Barnet, I would say recalibrate your time horizons. Everyone hates oil, coal and China; I love them for that reason. I'm in this not to make friends but to make money.
Alias, in terms of your 'winner / loser' strategy, can you comment on my BP story above; genuinely I'm interested in your insights. Is timing important or not? Thanks, Alias; great reading your posts!
