What Lewis said!
That patent was tied to a particular hardware implementation that would be available for OEMs. But the implementation requires external processing. Which may not know the physical positions of the cameras, so it would not know if you were watching directly instead of via the mirror. Of course the lack of Camera in the mirror means there would be no DMS in this patent.
Could they add them, yes. But without full visibility of the drivers eyes nagging them to look at the mirror because they are reversing towards a parked car that they are looking at isn't helpful. When would a mirror mount DMS not see your eyes, when your body and head is twisted so that you can look out the rear window!
But I have no doubt
Multiple external cameras, but no internal ones or DMS/OMS
No, that sounds like their own implementation. Of course, it may only get installed in their own cars and even then maybe not in Europe for long
Both registered on the same day but although on similar themes, they are quite separate.
Of course we know that GM have Qualcomm for their future driving control so it is unlikely that the teams would be working together now, even if they were in 2020
Thanks JC,
Interesting patent, shows the thinking of NVidia. There is some black box magic that determines an attentativeness score based on saccades and gaze patterns; and a cognative load factor which compares past history.
But the crux is it will either warn you, or suppress an alarm based on whether you gazed at something outside.
So this is no direct worry for us, as the warn or suppress alarm part is not SEE, but part of the Tier1 implementation. Certainly we saw Veoneer demo this. Let's leave their lawyers to sort it out.
David, they key thing that you are missing is that the only Financial journalist with any nouse about DMS to ask any searching questions is Mr Safestocks
JC, I hope that if granted, Continental do what Volvo did with the 3 point seatbelt - don't charge for the patent to ensure it is used far and wide. Once a driver is detected to be inebriated or incapacitated, then the surrounding drivers and pedestrians deserve to have maximum protection from all of the safety tech in the car, whether the driver disabled it or not.
JC, this on one hand is a practical swap out of current lighting hidden above and behind the overhead luggage lockers in aircraft which mixes coloured RGB and IR LEDs. However, the usual shopping list of features is a hypothetical land grab. Yes IR cabin cameras exist and are useful. But claiming to perform eye tracking is a joke. This is by design indirect and diffused light, so could not provide a glint, just background lighting
Sorry JC, no need for SEE here, it is all about guessing what the person would want to look at and focusing or zooming as appropriate
DMS can help when the "Self drivers" are human and tired or distracted. But all of Seeing Machines valuable data, won't help "robots" to learn to drive cars. But it will help the humans who have to either monitor the driving all of the time - Tesla and level 2 to stay alert and aware of the surroundings
When Level 3 cars are allowed to drive within their ODD, DMS will ensure that the driver is ready to take over.
And for Waymo (and one or two others), Seeing Machines' bDMS (backup driver monitoring system) is currently ensuring that the safety drivers are staying alert while monitoring the test vehicles out on the road, so we don't have more Elaine Herzberg issues during testing.
Brick, perhaps you need to check myth number 3:
https://twitter.com/seeingmachines/status/1508308237405376514?s=20&t=R0iKpOCvYw7fVhJa5k-4xg
A handful of seconds of a video of a driver being distracted or having a microsleep won't solve "self-driving" problems.
It took 8,873,644,506 kilometres of monitoring drivers for SEE to record 11,592,646 distraction events.
In the 12 months they recorded 254,504 fatigue events that resulted in an intervention
Some patents are just too futuristic:
Seat belt - check,
brain cap - check,
attach wrist sensor - check.
Oh yes, brain control + steering wheel is definitely the future.
Thanks JC
Good find JC.
Don't forget, this is not Chinese innovation this is actually Volvo guys. Not sure what the market they are aiming for. Follow the eyes and show the view from exterior camera on the screen.
Two features were missing - turn off the feature if my wife is present.
- it was not programmed to "zoom and enhance"
That news alone is worth a penny on the sp!
1. It enables defence work
2. You don't jump through hoops like this and get approval unless the defence work is demanding that you do it and there isn't a suitable US company who could do it instead
Bloody good news, a tiddler but that little wedge opens a crack big enough for 2 and 4 engine jets to fly through.
Conservative by nature they need someone else to jump first. Given the nature of these long and irregular flights with single pilot operations it will be a thorough proving ground for the hardware and software. Showing it works here as well as in trucks and cars takes away the perceived risks, so now it can be deployed in long and short haul narrow and wide body jets - passenger and cargo - for real scale.
No mention of data recording? Wonder if it will be integrated into flight data recorders in this implementation?

DR777 - OmniVision only make the camera. What matters is who does the software for the SoC or the chip
For anyone concerned that we may have upset Stellantis by not bidding for this minor RFQ, don't worry. Stellantis know exactly what SEE can deliver - they just need to look at the Jeep Grand Cherokees that we won with Veoneer.
We know from PMcG that he is focused on the larger RFQs. He isn't wasting his time on nickel and dime contracts when he can use the same resources to bid and win on the big money contracts.
My money is on this being Citroen or Peugeot - one of the former "majors" who focus on mid market cars.
Now these are minor brands among a family of European car makers that will be sharing platforms with their new siblings. This platform will be planned in ahead of Opel (& Vauxhall) fully joining the family, so may not get the full scale of brands. The design decisions were probably made before Qualcomm was confirmed as a serious solution, so could have been retained as the "insurance" option.
Now I am glad that SEE didn't stoop to pick up this AUD7.5 million contract
Note we have had such tiny contracts with GM before - but SEE hide the value, this is one that Smart Eye want to appear as big as possible.
I am happy that Paul chose to focus his resources in the correct places.
Ignore the de-rampers who hope to get more value from their buy-in by spreading doom and gloom instead of real research
Thanks UDWG,
Now seriously, if you thought I was impressed. Go read the T3 review!
