At the other end of a long tortuous and expensive process is the goal - a patent granting protection to your Intellectual Property. This week in the US, Seeing Machines were granted a patent for
PHONE DOCKING STATION FOR ENHANCED DRIVING SAFETY

Now this patent is based on an Australian patent application from 2015!

Now I don't see SEE rushing to market with their own device, but it is very timely as about now we are starting to see aftermarket solutions starting to appear for DMS. Soon the great unwashed will hear about DMS and consider buying one for their DMS less car. Just like SatNav or Bluetooth adapters we're all the rage for a while. So we can now stop devices coming to market unless they pay us for the privilege of not getting sued.

What is even more enticing is the thought that we may even get handed wodges of cash to let someone else do all the hard work of now bringing a product or even a range of products to market.

So are we worried? Google muscling into our area on a patent that looks entirely reasonable...

Well do the claims explain that they are throwing in every option except for the kitchen sink, corneal reflections (bright eyes), off axis illumination (dark eyes), glints or any expertise in human eyes. Yes, this is a silicon Valley solution - machine learning can do anything. Luckily, we have a thing called "prior art'. You can't patent what we are already doing publicly and their lack of knowledge in the field shows more the skill of patent lawyer and the optimism of the SV companies. I will still sleep well tonight

Why would a chip manufacturer mention Seeing Machines when launching a new camera chip?

Come on think it through.

A 5 mega pixel chip, that has RGB (visible colour) and 940nm Infrared and a global shutter?

Processing images on affordable SoC is hard. Processing on expensive NVidia is easier but unless you are efficient you take too much of the expensive resource.

Now remember last year, Our friends at Omnivision launched a chip using Smart Eye that was paired with a 2.1 mega pixel camera. That may be the device that supports their not quite launched AIS aftermarket DMS system.

The 5 Mega Pixel camera produces too much data for any of our competitors chips to operate at a reasonable frame rate without dropping frames (stalling). The exception here is NVidia, but that is too expensive for mainstream automotive where expense is trimmed to the bone.

So if OmniVision want to sell a global shutter (ie DMS/OMS camera that is no use for external facing use) in the mass market, then it will be feeding a Seeing Machines DMS/OMS system. - and why not associate yourself with the best

When I first started investing in SEE I scanned through many old posts, but certain posts stood out for their intelligence, directness and certainty that Seeing Machines would be the right choice (eventually). I respected Red's opinions and convictions.

So the charts have aligned, we have plenty of exceptional good news and a depressing macro-economic background. So I predict a cold front of negative views, faint praise and not so subtle attempts to weaken your resolve.

We will have intermittent showers of new instant experts and occasional but persistent grumblers. There goal is to knock the price down a peg or two because they smell a bargain.

Stand fast, ignore their cherry picked calculations and don't give them the oxygen of replying on their negative titled threads.

The remote control buttons was referring to the Mercedes S-Class where gaze tracking and gestures replace buttons or allow new features. For example when using the 4 way controller to adjust the side mirrors, you don't need to select left or right, the car knows which mirror you are looking at. Same with dynamic lighting as you look around the cabin, the passenger light or footwell lights come on automatically

Xperi DTS don't scare me.

In their own publicity, they state that they are in the Top 5 DMS suppliers. That is pretty far down in the list of also rans.

To paraphrase Brian Clough, "I wouldn't say Seeing Machines are the best DMS supplier, But they are in the top one.."

Bit of a kludge. Designed before DMS was mandatory. May not give enough detail in the camera for Eye Tracking. So still need a proper driver facing camera. This was designed to be a single install without integration

Vascular, we saw that last year, it is impressive, but that did not include Occula (confirmed) , so you can imagine the step change in performance when the real deal arrives

There is an understandable similarity in the description of the equipment as that is generally how it needs to work. But in Toyota's case, this is merely setting the stage. But when you read their patent - it is only covering a tiny element - just using the driver's attention to the Blind Spot warning light! Do they look when they see the warning, or do they miss or ignore the warning. That is it!

1. A driver monitoring system comprising:
an image capturing device capturing a face of a driver of a vehicle to generate a facial image of the driver; and a processor configured to detect an angle of a facial orientation or a line of sight of the driver based on the facial image, and judge distracted driving by the driver based on the angle, *wherein the vehicle is provided with at least one indicator showing a presence of a surrounding vehicle in a rear lateral area of the vehicle*, and when the indicator is turned on, the processor is configured to ease a condition for judging distracted driving concerning a predetermined angular range when the driver looks at the indicator.

2. The driver monitoring system according to claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to judge that the driver is driving while distracted if the angle is outside a threshold range for equal to or greater than a threshold time, and broaden the threshold range so that the predetermined angular range is included in the threshold range when the indicator is turned on.

3. The driver monitoring system according to claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to judge that the driver is driving while distracted if the angle is maintained within the predetermined angular range for equal to or greater than a first threshold time when the indicator is not turned on, and judge that the driver is driving while distracted if the angle is maintained within the predetermined angular range for equal to or greater than a second threshold time when the indicator is turned on, and the second threshold time is longer than the first threshold time.

Every step forwards is progress, even if it is a tiny step; and when it comes to blocking competitors, every potential patent is secured so that tiny step becomes a mighty wall!

I did check this out. It is a movable camera in a shuttle type vehicle, so not really a worry

VSI may be rushing these through final production as I speak, but I see this as another moat. Just like standalone Satnavs or Bluetooth adapters for cars, they will be a poor compromise against the a good well implemented OEM integrated system, but there is a window to sell them and they may do well, so the license fees or infringement penalties could be a nice earner

Ah, the USPO never learned to write the date properly, so on 11th Jan, Seeing Machines has a shiny new patent (unless there is a last minute objection).

Now, I am no expert. But I don't see Seeing Machines jumping into the consumer hardware space. Yet, they have pursued this patent for many years. So either, they have a licensee lined up, or they will be keeping their eyes peeled ready for infringers (when the great unwashed) wake up and see that DMS is a must have for every vehicle.
