Ford BlueCruise launched in 2021 as an advanced hands-free driver assist feature for drivers, with its Lincoln equivalent, ActiveGlide, following a short time later. The relatively new tech is now a priority for the company after shutting Argo AI last month, and the company has pivoted from trying to commercialize self-driving tech to further developing the software needed to make it work. But until recently, car shoppers didn’t have much of an opportunity to see where the tech operated outside of buying a Ford or Lincoln vehicle equipped with the feature. Fortunately, Ford spokesperson Mike Levine recently revealed that the automaker has launched a new interactive map on the official BlueCruise website that allows anyone to see exactly where the tech currently operates.

Japan turns to Seeing Machines

The really important learning from this win is that SEE has finally cracked Japan, after years of hard work. Marc Bunce, an analyst at broker Cenkos, says: “We believe today’s win is a first step into the Japanese market and that the cost and performance advantages of Seeing Machines software and embedded systems approach, will enable it to win further business with Japanese OEMs.”

Hence, this will prove to be the first of many contracts with Japanese car companies that will confirm Seeing Machines position as the global leader in driver/occupant monitoring (DMS/OMS).

Mark Griggs can still see Ethan Collier-Whitewood’s vehicle crossing the centre line of State Highway 26, at Eureka, on February 1 this year, and the “sound and feeling of a violent impact”.

“I remember everything,” his victim impact statement read in the Hamilton District Court this afternoon.

Fatigue - the main killer on Waikato roads
Outside court, sergeant Steven Jones, of the Waikato road policing unit, said vehicles crossing the centre line was the cause in six of the last seven crashes on the district’s roads.

“The fact is, it’s a massive issue and we’d just like motorists to heed the signs and make sure that they drive refreshed, focused, and aware of their surroundings and to avoid driving while tired.”

If fatigue was combined with police impairment statistics, the figure was even bigger.

“It’s probably around 20 per cent of our crashes. We know that because there’s no steering input or breaking prior to impact.”

Asked if he felt Collier-Whitewood’s case was unusual as he said he wasn’t tired and remained unsure why he fell asleep, Jones said February 1 was a hot day in the Waikato.

“Not really ... it was a hot sunny day for us. It’s just that we have three inches of white paint separating oncoming traffic, and people make mistakes.”

The four key areas of the program’s assessment, which have been in place since 2009, will now reflect four phases of a potential crash event: Safe Driving, Crash Avoidance, Crash Protection, and Post-Crash Safety. Euro NCAP has confirmed that this change will take effect from 2026. From then, the program will transition towards a three-year protocol update cycle. Euro NCAP will be phasing in virtual testing, improving testing for vulnerable road user protection, and introducing rating incentives for a range of driver monitoring systems.

By 2030, several additions will be made to further support the Euro NCAP program, such as the testing and assessment of assisted and automated driver support systems; the assessment of technologies that monitor drive impairment and cognitive distraction; and requirements that further improve the real-world efficacy of speed assistance technologies. New active safety tests implemented into the program before this deadline will closely simulate real road environments, examining HMI design to ensure the development of more robust, efficient, driver assist systems.

By the end of the decade, Euro NCAP is also looking to integrate the testing and assessment of safety functions enabled by V2V, V2I, and V2X communication technologies, while promoting best practices for vehicle security and data access. For EVs specifically, Euro NCAP will evaluate their fire risk and thermal runaway to help gather improved information for first and second responders.

New passive safety tests conducted by the program will provide focus to gender equality and the aging population of vehicle drivers and occupants. In expanding its scope beyond the car, Euro NCAP is investigating new programs that will assess the safety of motorcycles and motor scooters, alongside light and heavy goods vehicles. Through these tests, Euro NCAP is ultimately seeking to address and underline the overrepresentation of these vehicles in road fatalities and serious injuries.

The all-new all-electric Subaru Solterra achieved the highest score ever achieved by a Subaru vehicle in Safety Assist1 in the Small Off-Road class, according to the most recently updated test specifications. The Solterra was registered with the highest marks in monitoring passenger status (including driver monitoring and seat belt reminder). In addition, the Solterra also achieved a very high score for AEB car-to-car (pre-collision system), while performing well in the sections; Emergency Lane Keep Assist, Lane Keep Assist and Human Machine Interface. Overall, the autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system performed well in compatibility tests.

The all-new Solterra is equipped with a seat belt reminder system, which is fitted as standard on both the front and rear seats, as well as a system to detect driver fatigue (i.e. Driver Monitoring System). The lane detection system (i.e. Lane Tracing Assist) gently corrects the vehicle’s route if it drifts out of the lane, but also intervenes in more critical situations. A speed assistance system detects the local speed limit thanks to the Traffic Sign Reader and the driver can choose to set the limit (via the speed limiter) or let the system do it automatically.

This sharp looking gray machine is the new Buick Electra E5, a electric SUV for the Chinese car market. It is the second new China-only General Motors product we see today, after the Cadillac GT4 compact crossover.
So to get into China’s booming EV market Buick had to come up with something more interesting, and that is this new Buick Electra E5. The ‘Electra’ name will be used for a series of upcoming electric cars, which will include an electric sedan and an electric MPV. They are made at SAIC-GM too, and the new Electra series will likely mean the end of the Velite series.

The Electra E5 is based on GM’s Ultium electric vehicle platform. It will be equipped with SAIC-GM’s VCS smart ****pit and with a new generation of GM’s Super Cruise driving assistance system. The E5 is a five seat car just under five meters long: 4892/1905/1681, with a 2954 wheelbase and a 2570 kilo curb weight. Standard wheels are 18 inch with optional 20 inch units.

The Fisker Ocean Is a Reality. Why It’s Not Just Another EV.

Today is the day, the day when production of the all-electric Fisker FSR –5.01% (ticker: FSR) Ocean SUV begins. Fisker is not Tesla TSLA –3.86% It’s a small EV start-up that will only deliver a handful of cars in 2022, but it’s still a big deal for the entire auto industry. That’s because Fisker isn’t actually building the car—it’s being manufactured by auto parts giant Magna International MGA –2.16% (MGA). It’s among the first EVs to be built by contract manufacturing—but it won’t be the last.

Having a third party isn’t unheard of in the car business. Magna has built cars for other auto makers, but vehicles auto makers choose to outsource are usually lower volume, niche cars. Auto makers always have their own assembly capacity, but Fisker doesn’t seem to ever want to own an automotive assembly plant.
