The second set of technologies are cameras pointed at the driver designed to detect his level of fatigue, often by monitoring his eyelids to track his gaze and look for signs of “microsleep.” Seeing Machines is one of several companies that market driver-facing cameras that use computer vision to monitor a driver’s eyelids and head position for signs of fatigue or inattention.

If the driver’s eyes close or look away from the road for too long, it sounds an alarm and sends a video to his boss—and can also cause the driver’s seat to vibrate in order to “goose” him back into attention. Another driver-facing camera vendor, Netradyne, uses deep learning and data from driver- and road-facing cameras to generate scores for drivers based on their safe and unsafe driving behaviors.

In 2023, European automotive manufacturers will be held to a new scoring standard that includes DMS features that support Safety Assist scores. The new mandatory regulations affect car manufacturers and OEMs alike on a global scale, and have seen exceptional progress since 2020 in China. Moreover, there are a variety of other safety rating boards available around the world as well, such as the JNCAP in Japan and the Latin NCAP in South America, and the US’ Department of Transportation will establish new DMS performance standards via the SAFE Act (“Stay Aware For Everyone”) starting in 2024.

Numbers should start ramping up.

There were a ton of new vehicles we loved, however, including E-GMP platform vehicles from the greater Hyundai including the quick charging and beautifully equipped IONIQ 5, Kia EV6 and the Genesis GV60. The IONIQ 6 is coming along as are future vehicles (Ev9, etc) on this platform. If this award was for platforms, the E-GMP would probably take it.
There’s also the hot-selling Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150, the beautiful Cadillac Lyriq, VW’s improved ID.4 that is now made in Chattanooga with Plug and Charge and V2G coming. But there’s one thing that sticks out about all of these EV CUVs: The sticker price starts at around $50,000.

Then there’s the mighty Chevy Bolt EV which actually saw a $6000 decrease in price this year to an outlier price starting at $25,600. That price is changing the game and allowing more people get a full, non-compliance EV. The longer EUV is only $1600 more and offers some of the best Autonomy options on the road. But low price is only part of the equation.

The ambition is for the provisionally named Tempest, which will replace the Typhoon, to be a next-generation jet that will be operational by 2035 - enhanced by capabilities such as fully autonomous control, advanced sensors, cutting-edge weapons and innovative data systems.

Gesture control and eye-tracking technologies will be able to measure the pilot's workload - identifying fatigue and mental stress. In-built artificial intelligence will allow the aircraft to remain in combat should the pilot lose consciousness.

I’m not sure if you’ve been feeling it, but there’s something happening right now in the automated driving/autonomy/self-driving cars space, and it’s not a lot of fun, but it’s actually good news for consumers. It’s a bit of a hangover, really, a feeling that the party’s over and the house is a mess and the wet spot you’re laying just might be pee. Now, that analogy doesn’t sound good, but it’s the catalyst that’s needed to get your ass out of bed, change the sheets, get in the shower, and start taking care of ****. This is the current state of driving automation: finally coming to terms with the scale and difficulty of the task, and finally starting to think it through without the hype.

The mood in the AV space is slowly moving to the realization that, hey, full Level 5 autonomy is hard, really hard, and maybe, just maybe, it’s not a reasonable or even desirable destination to target. Apple, for example, just revealed that it’s dramatically scaling back their plans for their somehow still-upcoming car, plans that once included no steering wheel or pedals and provisions for sleep. And our pals over at Tesla seem to now be backtracking on their plan to use a camera-only system, called Tesla Vision, for their automated driving systems and are now looking to add radar back into the mix. Argo AI went out of business, at least in part because Ford realized Level 4 was going to take longer to achieve than originally thought. That last one is especially surprising because out of all these autonomous driving startups, Argo AI had its **** together much more than many others.
The Apple announcement is especially interesting, because, at least according to the Bloomberg report and via their anonymous source, we can see a pattern of thought that I think shows a realistic state of the current technology and also how many questions there are still left to be answered.

HUMMER IS BACK — AND IT’S AWESOME
Playing on the reputation for this oversized and military-inspired truck, GM has undertaken a mammoth task: resurrect the Hummer for the modern era. Gone is the gas-fueled engine that generated single digit MPG. Like 7 MPG, perhaps 10 MPG on a good day. Now, Hummer is powered by General Motor’s Ultium battery technology, which is designed to go far and charge fast. During my test drive it charged with decent speed and a single charge covered most of the ground I had planned in a day (just to be sure I didn’t let the charge run out I charged pro-actively during my test drive).

Hummer is as powerful and muscular as its reputation. It has incredible off road capability — it wouldn’t be Hummer without that — and can generate up to 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 lb.-ft of torque. Weighing in at 9,500 lbs. it needs all that power to get moving. But, it does so effortlessly, another detail I loved. I never felt the weight of the truck under me; unlike some trucks, I didn’t feel the need to engage all my upper body strength to make a tight turn, merge onto the highway or back into a parking spot. It reminded me of the Saint Bernard that thinks its the same size as a Jack Russell and can do everything the other dog can do, equally as effortlessly.

The new generation Ford Edge is undergoing a radical redesign inside and out. When it debuted in the U.S. in 2007, it was the first mid-size crossover from Ford, positioned between the Escape and Explorer. Mechanically based on the Fusion sedan, the Edge had relatively unnoteworthy design cues but succeeded as a family hauler.

The new Ford Edge is similar to the Mondeo in styling but will feature a cabin mirroring the Evos in appearance and amenities. Undoubtedly the party piece of the redesign is the door-to-door infotainment screen. At a colossal 3.6 feet wide, the screen leaves drivers at the helm of a dashboard Lieutenant Sulu would have been jealous of.
Ford’s BlueCruise Level 2—formerly Active Drive Assist—uses blue lighting on the digital instrument cluster to indicate a hands-free zone. The technology builds upon the company’s Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go, Lane Centering, and Speed Sign Recognition. Ford says that such allows for actual hands-free driving on prequalified sections of divided highways while being monitored by driver-facing cameras.

The Edge will also boast Ford’s budding C-V2X (cellular-based vehicle-to-everything) technology to increase driver safety. Ford Authority says the tech enables wireless transmission between vehicles and 5G-capable objects to “talk” and “listen” to each other. Ford envisions its C-V2X technology communicating with stop lights, driver feedback displays, and other infrastructure to warn drivers of what they may encounter. Additionally, the system could enable an in-car system that would be able to provide drivers with more context in navigation.

LG Innotek said Wednesday it has successfully developed new types of high-performance hybrid lenses for autonomous driving that have reduced size and thickness while increasing price competitiveness compared to existing products in the market.

Camera lenses are a key component of autonomous driving solutions as they help detect the driver’s movements, according to the company.

LG Innotek has showcased two new hybrid lenses — one to be used in the Driver Monitoring System (DMS), and another to be used in the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS).

The former is ready for its launch, while the latter will be made available in the global market by 2023, according to the electronic parts maker.

Unlike traditional lenses which use only glass, LG Innotek’s newly developed lenses are made by cross-applying glass and plastic. Manufacturers were reluctant to use plastic in lens-making as plastic is susceptible to deformities caused by high temperatures or external pressures.

However, LG Innotek said it has developed a mechanism to ensure that the partially plastic lens does not deform or experience quality change when exposed to heat or external forces. Rather, the decision to use plastic decreased the size and price, according to the manufacturer.

LG Innotek said it has become world’s first to apply plastic to ADAS lenses.

“As the level of autonomous driving increases, more sensors are required, meaning parts need to be smaller,” said a LG Innotek official.

Moreover, as camera modules are being put near the roof of the car rather than on its dashboard, carmakers are demanding lenses that can be more easily hidden from view, the company official explained.

“We expect LG Innotek’s high-performance hybrid lens, which has overcome the limitations of plastic with innovation, to create a huge wave in the market,” said LG Innotek Vice President Kang Min-seok.

With the increased concern with driver and occupant safety, the automotive industry is seeing a growing demand for wide-angle lenses and cameras in the interior of vehicles. With this demand we see the trend of moving to a centralized architecture approach as the way to monitor the cabin’s complete interior with a single camera, including both the driver and passengers in the back seat. Using a single camera has several benefits, such as minimizing the impact on the interior design, the overall system cost and the required computation power to process the sensor images.

L2+: from baffling jargon to the future of autonomy

Carmakers and suppliers are piling into this hands-off, brain-on tech to help monetise and advance autonomy.

Along with Ford, BMW is another company betting big on L2+ for its Neue Klasse platform cars expected in 2025. VW is interested, while Chinese premium-angled makers such as Nio and Xpeng are already making inroads. Analyst firm Frost & Sullivan reckons the number of vehicles on the roads globally with L2+ capability will reach 11 million by 2025, up from 115,450 in 2020.

Another big appeal of L2+ is that it represents an important stepping stone on the route to real autonomy. The basic chip, relatively simple camera and associated software that enables driver-assist functions common now such as adaptive cruise control and lane centring will have to be upgraded to systems that have a much better idea of where the car is located and what obstacles it faces.

That’s triggering a supplier war among the chip companies, notably Qualcomm, Intel-owned Mobileye and Nvidia as they not only angle themselves to supply the system-on-chip (SoC) brains to power L2+ technology but also the sensors (if they have them, like Mobileye does) and the “vision” software stack to interpret events.

The competition has passed Tesla by when it comes to automated assisted-driving technology. Here is a look at where the industry stands with regard to hands-free automated driving technology.
Tesla is certainly the first car company one thinks of when it comes to “Full Self Driving” and “Autopilot.” Tesla did a fantastic job of picking the perfect buzzwords for its automated driver-assist systems. The technology Tesla offers varies from month to month, its pricing and even its pricing system seem very fluid, and when we last checked, the vast majority of Tesla buyers steered clear of paying for full self-driving.

Rather than planning for hands-free driver-assisted operation, Tesla is instead bolstering its anti-cheating systems to ensure drivers keep their hands on the wheel when using FSD and Autopilot.

By contrast, five brands are presently delivering models with automated driving assistance technology that allows a driver to cover many miles with their hands off the wheel and pedals. The car will steer, accelerate, and brake all by itself. You may think that this technology would be rare and super expensive (given Tesla’s price model), but actually, hands-free driver-assist technology is available for as little as $2,200 on a vehicle costing less than $35,000. Many models from many brands now offer this feature. The easy part is counting the Teslas with this technology. Zero.
Chevrolet - Super Cruise
Chevrolet is GM’s value brand, and its Chevy Bolt line is one of its most value-packed pair of models. We've tested both generations of the Bolt five-door hatchback and have had a chance to twice test the newer Bolt EUV model, which offers optional hands-free Super Cruise. A Bolt EUV Premier with hands-free Super Cruise can be purchased for under $35,000, including destination charges. The optional Super Cruise package included in that price costs just $2,200. We tested hands-free Super Cruise in the Bolt EUV Premier on public roads over a year ago for the first time and found that it worked just as advertised. You set it and then sit in the car while it does the driving. Paying attention to the situation, of course, so you can save the day if anything should go wrong. It never did while we were an occupant using the system.

When self-driving technology first began to emerge, most automotive experts (myself included) figured that it would only be offered on all-new battery-electric vehicles since it would require a lot of energy to drive its sensors. We also assumed serious forethought would be required to work all of its technology into the new design. Nope. GM offers Super Cruise hands-free automated driver assist on its Silverado pickup. The very definition of a traditional gas-powered vehicle.

While the car had been reported to be a fully autonomous car like prototypes from EV startup Canoo, the current design for the car will have more conventional car features like a steering wheel and pedals, Bloomberg reports. This new version won’t be fully autonomous; instead, users will apparently only be able to activate the self-driving features on highways, closer to driver-assist options like GM’s Super Cruise and Ford’s BlueCruise. (Perhaps Apple is wary of running into the issues Tesla has faced with its Full Self-Driving technology.)

It shows how important the Magna deal was. Being funded in a world that’s a bit tricky atm. Great bit of business from those involved in the deal.
