“Cabin monitoring is complex and requires careful integration of infrared illumination, image capture, data processing, and algorithm layers to achieve a real-time response,” said Yin Wu, director of automotive product line management at ADI, in a news release announcing the partnership. “Together with Seeing Machines, we are supporting the automotive industry with pragmatic solutions to help reduce collisions and save lives.”

NBDS invests in companies like ADI that pursue disruptive growth agendas that the portfolio management team believes will shape the future and can invest globally across market capitalizations. As of Jan. 9, ADI made up 6.27% of the ETF’s holdings.

Mr Mark Andrew Hubble has been found guilty of breaching Section 7a of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and sentenced to eight months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, following a prosecution brought by the Office of Rail and Road.
Mr Hubble was sending and receiving messages on his phone during the course of his journey, while driving a locomotive owned and operated by DB Cargo (UK) Limited on Monday, 23 March 2020.

After entering the siding at Bromsgrove station, he lost concentration due to reading a picture message on his mobile phone and then failed to control the speed of his locomotive, which struck the buffer stops, derailing and partially obstructing the adjacent main line. A passing CrossCountry passenger train then struck Mr Hubble’s locomotive - no-one was injured, but there was extensive damage to both the locomotive and the passenger train.

The prosecution asserted that the defendant's failure to control his train due to distraction caused by using his mobile phone while at the controls of his locomotive led to a serious incident. It added that under slightly different circumstances the incident may have had a “catastrophic outcome”.

In delivering the sentence, Judge Cartwright said: “Luckily there were only six people on board; the guard, driver and four passengers. But for the lockdown, the train might otherwise have been carrying a good number of others. Alan Jones, the driver, was immediately covered in glass, his driver's door torn open. If the locomotive had derailed a little further over, this would have been a head-on collision and he would have been killed.”

Tesla apparently has a plan to stop reminding drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel. Never mind that their instruction manual says hands must continuously be on the wheel -- since that just seems to be performance art for blaming drivers for crashes. When they call the steering wheel safety reminder a "nag" that is just so revealing about how little Tesla insiders value driver monitoring (and by extension, safety).

OTOH the steering wheel monitor is stunningly ineffective (just read an NTSB Tesla crash fatality report or various reports of how common it is to use defeat devices). So perhaps it will not really make a bad situation all that much worse. ?????

The bigger point is that NHTSA is just adding this to its mountain of issues under investigation that just keeps dragging on. It's long past time NHTSA decided to do something (or not) about unqualified, largely unsupervised testing of immature automation technology on public roads.

A more advanced version of BlueCruise is on the horizon as well. The forthcoming technology will propel BlueCruise into the L3 level of autonomous driving, which means it will feature an advanced level of partial automation without being fully autonomous. BlueCruise L3 will rely on various driver assist systems, an advanced scanner array and artificial intelligence to make decisions based on changing traffic and road conditions. The goal is for the system to enable drivers to take their eyes completely off the road while it is active.

Harman initially launched its DMS, called Ready Care, in September to measure driver eye activity and state of mind to determine cognitive distraction levels and then have the car initiate a personalized response to help mitigate dangerous driving situations. Based on the driver's stress levels, Ready Care could also provide alternate routes, perhaps away from traffic jams, that might help alleviate stress.

On Wednesday, Harman added to the Ready Care product contactless measurement of human vitals such as heart rate, breathing rate and interbeat levels to further determine a driver's state of well-being. Now, rather than just relying on an infrared global shutter camera, Harman has added to its set of sensors an in-cabin radar. Harman says this will also allow the vehicle to detect if a child is left unattended.

That includes an array of 45 cameras, radar, Lidar, and other sensors which, they promised, would make Afeela vehicles far safer than anything on the road. The technology also will allow for autonomous driving, they promised. And it appears Sony Honda is targeting far more advanced capabilities than what current systems like General Motors’ Super Cruise or Tesla’s Autopilot can deliver.

And there’s a reason that goes beyond enhancing safety. With the person behind the wheel largely freed up from actual driving duties they’ll likely want to find other things to do besides staring out the windows.

The 2024 Cadillac XT4 will finally get its long-awaited refresh. Now, Cadillac Society has learned exactly when the forthcoming luxury crossover will enter production.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the start of regular production (SORP) of the 2024 Cadillac XT4 will take place in April 2023 at the Spring Hill plant in Tennessee.
Inside, the forthcoming XT4 will be very different from the current 2023 model, overhauling the ****pit with a curved screen that will span the instrument panel and the center stack, combining both into what appears to be a seamless display – much like the fifth-gen Escalade and new Lyriq. We also know that the upcoming 2024 Cadillac XT4 will feature the luxury marque’s advanced driver assist system, Super Cruise, which has been previously unavailable on the compact crossover.
