Ford's electric vehicle range has contributed to strong sales for the Blue Oval, with the entire EV range contributing to impressive figures in November.
The F-150 Lightning continues to prove popular with customers; Ford sold 2,062 examples of the electric pickup truck last month. Since its official launch in late May, 13,258 units have been purchased by customers across the country.
Elsewhere, Mustang Mach-E sales increased by 14.6% compared to last year, with sales totaling 3,539 for November. This comes as the automaker celebrates a production milestone for the electric crossover. Ford's electric commercial van, the E-Transit, remains a segment leader in the commercial EV industry with an impressive 80% market share. 5,811 examples have been sold in the year-to-date, which includes the 654 models sold last month.
Overall, these strong EV sales position Ford as the second best-selling EV brand in America, behind only Tesla.

With people at the wheel ever more susceptible to distractions, drowsiness and impairment, driver monitoring systems (DMS) are considered key in accident prevention. But are we overdesigning the sensors at the heart of these systems? Simulations using a new sensor modeling tool and a deep neural network (DNN) indicate it is plausible that we are—by a lot. This means the automotive sensor industry has an opportunity to substantially decrease DMS power and cost without sacrificing critical performance.

Time is of the essence. As of 2024, all new vehicles sold within the European Union must be equipped with a DMS. At the same time, other functions, such as occupancy monitoring and videoconferencing, must be integrated in the same camera system.

DMS design starts at the sensor level. The current sensor crop is designed with full functionality, so they can take very “pretty pictures” under a wide range of operating and lighting conditions. But do we need pretty pictures? Or are we doing the engineering equivalent of putting out a match with a firehose?

DMS must detect facial characteristics, such as the mouth, nose, and eyes to determine the alertness of the driver (Figure 1). Could we simplify the design of sensors so that they cleanly capture the pertinent information, even under difficult environmental conditions, and optimize the power-performance-area (PPA) budget for those features while also keeping the cost down?

Honda's Sensing level 2 driver assist system (AcuraWatch, if you bought upscale) will be growing more capable in the coming years, the automaker revealed on Wednesday. This decision comes as part of the company's efforts to advance its Safety for Everyone tennant and create a "collision-free society." These advancements are debuting this year in China under the Honda Sensing 360 and Sensing Elite monikers and will begin filtering to the US market in the second half of the decade, Honda has announced.

The original Sensing system first appeared on the 2015 CR-V Touring trim package but became a standard feature in 2019. It offers an array of assists with a focus on collision avoidance and mitigation, such as pedestrian detection, automatic braking, and driver attention monitoring. The original Sensing relied on a single monocular camera. Sensing 360, which debuted this year in China, adds 5 millimeter-wave sensors to that camera to provide (you guessed it) 360-degree coverage of the vehicle, while Sensing Elite is the premier version of the ADAS suite and includes extra features like hands-free active lane-change. These two packages will begin matriculating to the US market over the next few years and become standard equipment by the end of the decade, just like the current gen Honda Sensing is today.
