Listening to R4 , they have allowed Ed to make his ridiculous claim without any challenge. Then they wheel out a nice pensioner who says' we don't really need it give it to someone who needs it'. Ibug, Mappowder is one of SGN's major gas transmission sites . Why they would route a pipeline from Portland to Osmington is likely cost . Whilst under sea pipelines are expensive they are not likely to be as atronomically expensive as trying to excavate Portland stone and laying a pipeline on an overland route. Frankly the costs here will so so huge it would be better to construct a salt cavern elsewhere - hence this weeks RNS.

The electricity part of the paper looks feasible to me but the hydrogen part is at best embryonic.

Ibug there is no pipeline of any decent capacity running between Didcot and where significant hydrogen demand might exist. The smaller capacity pipelines have customers fed from them and frankly they would need full conversion to hydrogen from methane and I cannot see that happening anytime soon.

The big con being pushed by the green lobby and the government is, gas is expensive and because we generate a lot of our electricity from it , electricity is also expensive, so we need to get away from gas who's prices are fixed by international markets and generate using more renewables. The reason uk gas is priced in line with international markets is because we have two gas interconnector linking us to the european grid BUT we also have 7 electricity interconnectors linking us to their grid which means the same market forces will apply. I suppose the government strategy to reduce demand by killing off the pensioners this winter might have some effect...

Cynder, don't worry about the lack of a cavern - there will be a fund raise of about £250m to mine salt thereby creating a cavern = easy when you are spending other people's money.

Ibug, putting an electrolyser onto the didcot site is the easy bit the harder bit is finding some demand for the hydrogen. Didcot is a one horse town and the demand will be miles away in places like Reading - so who is going to stump up the millions for a pipeline? THis hydrogen malarky seems to be attracting charlatans who see pots of government cash there to be 'spent' on projects that are dead in the water from day 1. I despair of this country.

Hibbett made over £100m last uear and therefore, if we assume they will contribute at least £60m this year the £1bn profit mark will be exceeded even at the lower end. Once the analysts have finished playing with their spreadsheets I am hoping they land on a sp at least 10p higher than today.

Target and TJ up in the pre market US whilst Macy's down - what does this tell us about us consumers? Personally I don't know but there is obviously some strength there for the better retailers.

Paul, the idea behind gas storage is to supply from storage when existing supply is insufficient to meet demand and price will be higher than when it went into storage.

Personally I do't believe we will ever produce enough hydrogen for there to be a surplus - but that is another story.

Key question folks, if the Portland site was viable, would they distract themselves with a second site ? The investment in one site alone, along with the associated pipeline will be hundreds of millions that they don't have so why go for a second?
