THE SMR LANDSCAPE3 May 2025 12:25
Lots of thoughts here as to what June may bring in terms of a decision by HMG. RR have been building nuclear reactors for over 70 years, GE for 60 years. Both companies have a proven track record with this type of power generation technology. For very obvious reasons most here favour RR for the UK SMR contract award. Apart from being invested in the company, there are some very sound macro economic reasons that also suegeway into the foothills of national security and most definitely energy security. The issue of UK energy production and very importantly UK energy security is a fluid (no pun intended) and given the recent global events, a rapidly changing landscape. How realistic is the possibility of Terrapower moving into the UK SMR picture? In the short term, ie within the next 5 years, imo, highly unlikely. Why, because their fast sodium reactor is at this point in time purely conceptual. Not one fast sodium reactor has ever been built. Bill Gates, has, to date invested 1 billion dollars in Terrapower. Yes, that's a lot of money, but a drop in the proverbial ocean, given his very deep pockets. It may be, that if produced, the fast sodium reactor lives up to its potentially hypothetical greater efficiency than current technologies. But, even given the misgivings that many have with regards to HMG's ability to make sound business decisions that are exclusively for the benefit of Great Britain, it's difficult to imagine them risking the UK's future to a technology that hasn't made it off the drawing board. So, not long to wait, all being well. I do hope we get a very clear decision in June, that gives visibility to the Great British public & businesses alike as to what the unfolding energy production landscape in the UK will look like. If we are to turn this once great manufacturing nation around, then we need reliable, clean and cheaper energy. All the best, have a great BH weekend.
