RE: £30 in the next 5 years4 Feb 2026 08:36
Ah yes, the golden years of motoring. I have fond memories of helping my dad work on his cars. An Austin Cambridge, Morris Oxford, Vauxhall Viva SL90 to name a few.
One Saturday in 1975 springs to mind. We we on our way to a car auction at Preston, when our beloved Vauxhall Viva broke down, it was like it knew it was about to be replaced.
Fortunately there was a telephone box about 5 mins walk from where we'd coasted to a definitive halt. My mum called for a taxi, the drive floored it & got us to the train station with muniutes to spare.
We spent several hours watching as car after car went through. They were either to high mileage or too expensive. We gave up and walked over the road to a garage forecourt to look at the vehicles there.
After about 10 mins my younger brother came running up to us saying that he'd seen an Austin Maxi in the auction that was about to go through. The four of us raced back to see it. We had about 5 mins to check it over, it was blue with a 1750cc engine and only 28,000 miles on it. My dad was good with cars & he said he was going to bid for it.
The anticipation was intense as the bidding started at £800, my dad had £1000 in cash safety pinned to his inside jacket pocket...that was our limit. There were another couple of bidders, we held our breath as my dad made his final bid, "One thousand pounds"!!!, he shouted. "Going once, going twice" & after what felt like an eternity the auctioneer announced "sold"!
We drive it the 60 miles home, it was quiet, smooth & powerful and yes it had 5 gears...a rareity in back then. We all felt like royalty! ...What an adventure!
