Will be interesting to see if ONS revises the Nov inflation rate in the coming months ahead... it was interesting seeing GDP showing net zero growth for Sep+Oct+Nov...

Given inflation likely to uptick over months ahead there's 0% odd IMO of BoE cutting interest rates in Feb and with the stamp duty tax break still in operation until End March 2025 on house purchases...

So no relief in sight for long while ahead yet for business & household borrowing.

For CPI the first part of HY25 looks set to be very fiscally challenging. Even to scrape by flatlining, as the TU indicated as being their expectation for FY25, looks challenging to accomplish.

AimMaster2018... are you implying/suggesting the true inflation picture is likely worse than the ONS 2.5% published estimate yesterday?

Market overcelebrated those inflation figs (2.5%) yesterday! Given inflation figs landed only 0.1% improved over the very poor analyst forecast of 2.6% hardly surprising to see the SP drop backwards today as ultimately UK economy in very poor shape.

I still think EZJ's elevated input & operating costs are likely going to be elevated and even though ticket prices are high and popular routes busy this feels like the profits may end up falling short of expectations when Q1 results published.

Just my opinion and I don't think there's full recovery yet... given many shares in circulation.

Rampers may well have won out this small battle. Though I just can't see how they'll win the larger war. CPI currently a shorters dream stock IMO

Feb BoE likely hold

GDP looking set to enjoy anaemic growth/near stagnation

Slowing housing market (stagnant once stamp duty tax break ends)

Tax rises from April onwards incoming too... road ahead definitely bumpy for CPI.

Yes, for LTH's it seems some of Barnet Councils contracts with CPI have already lapsed, with more to follow and the last ones currently scheduled to lapse in March 2023 as Trisor has said.

Still... the central point is CPI are holding up Barnet Council as shining exemplar work... when if that were the case then why are Barnet Council exiting the deals with CPI then?

That Guardian article makes poetic reading lol:

FWIW AimMaster2018... I think once dust settles over todays inflation data the general market wide trajectory will resume its path downwards, 0.1% improvement over what were rather poor expectations is too little tangibly better. Initial consensus that BoE might cut rates in Feb feels likely to evaporate, I still expect a rates hold.

So apparently because CPI came in 0.1% better than economist consensus the market is now being lifted upwards & gilts significantly coming off the boil... 🤔🤔🤔

Personally, I don't buy it and I'm now examining equities I'm holding for consideration of selling (to take advantage of this upwards blip which ai don't think will last)

AimMaster2018 - Rock200 lacks understanding. Agree with you 100% the discussion board is for open debate + discussion 👍 - ultimately, at 2.5% UK inflation is still above target so it's still bad news... just not quite so bad as some feared. With Core still running at 3.2% I maintain expectation that BoE will not cut rates in February MPC and they'll want more data to check December is not just an odd blip and to firmly 'win' the battle against inflation. GDP figs tomorrow will be the interesting figs, is inflation lower because demand and GDP has been hammered? Or does GDP hold up well too? Need tomorrow's figs for the full picture and... there's always chance ONS revise the figures later on too.

Lands in at 2.5% for Dec... early estimate atm (possibility figure is later revised)...

Equities markets should be boosted by that, as they have been over in USA.
