The switch over to blended h2/natural gas is very straightforward and cheap with a swap of the burners in existing boilers. The suppliers are ready to go as soon as Govt gives the green light and areas will be switched over as soon as all boilers in that area are converted (this can be done as part of the annual service to cut down on costs). Yes obviously heat pumps will only work where it is feasible so that rules out a lot of housing stock. As more extreme weather events occur, Gov'ts will be forced to take action or get kicked out. Unfortunately like lemmings we pick journalists and war mongers for the top political jobs instead of scientists, pragmatists and climate aware politicians.

As soon as Govt decision on hydrogen/ gas blending and heating boiler conversion to run blended hydrogen/natural gas is made watch the sp soar. Gas grid becomes the battery storing massive surplus renewable energy currently wasted and sales of hydrogen via gas suppliers sky rockets. ITM is on standby ready to make this happen. Don't miss out on the party.

We have only just emerged from the acorn and have a very, very long way to go. Give it time and underestimate ITM at your peril.

On Sept. 7, South Korea's largest automaker Hyundai Motor Group (OTC:HYMTF) announced ambitious hydrogen plans at the self-hosted Hydrogen Wave global virtual forum.

Under its "Hydrogen Vision 2040," Hyundai Motor said it plans to electrify all commercial vehicles by 2028 using hydrogen fuel-cell systems. The company wants to become the world's first automaker to fully convert its commercial fleet in a bid to reduce global dependency on fossil fuels.

We had written-off fuel cell cars except in small numbers of experimental prototypes. If BMW etc can get this working in a popular large cars like the X5 in Germany and we get a viable refuelling network in UK in the next 5 years it helps ITM Motive since RHD variants could start to appear here. Fingers crossed.

I wonder about the costs in project below compared to power to gas using hydrogen (especially since it looks like new batteries used)?

A 22-megawatt storage facility has been put in place at the Pen y Cymoedd onshore wind farm in south Wales, comprising more than 500 BMW i3 battery packs.

Not forgetting that re-used batteries will also have a finite life-span requiring eventual disposal at that point.

Battery re-use/te-cycling etc is fine if economically viable and if able to absorb the huge numbers of obsolete batteries in the years ahead. If not it supports the case for more use of H2.

As with the cost of decommissioning nuclear power stations we will need to address the responsibility and costs of disposing of millions of large car batteries. They cannot be just dumped at end of life. Who pays - how do you legislate for it globally?

Diesel and petrol have co-existed happily and unremakably for decades. No reason why 2 alternative remedies for providing electric power cannot do the same given massive economies of scale provided by the demise of ff and the resultant cost effectiveness of both solutions. Looks like Toyota may pave the way if it produces hybrid fc/battery Prius and Corolla variants. Stellantis already have well advanced plans for hybrid fc/battery vans. Exciting times!!

I would go with all of that. We have the good fortune to have excellent public transport availability - wish it was green - plus freedom pass for all local journeys so just use the car for long distance trips including into Europe a fair bit Covid permitting. Hence some ev benefits are not needed and some disadvantages weigh heavier. If Mirai 2 was a bit cheaper I would go for it as we have 2 nearby refuelling stations. Be interesting to see the depreciation on them.

PM my concern with any new car using petrol or diesel (including hybrids) would be accelerating depreciation as ff gets phased out. But if you plan to keep it long term c 8-10 yrs that is less of a problem. You can get low mileage, 2 yr old (c£70k new) premium cars for virtually half price now, so I am using that route as a bridge to fc availability (assuming it happens). If it doesn’t I will go battery EV in about 5 yrs when prices will be much lower and technology much better than today's (autopilot/range etc). That is not to say that current EVs are bad - they are excellent but will get even better (and at lower than today's prices).

Kia Ev6 GT looks enticing though!

Toyota solid state battery breakthrough would be a gamechanger for them plus if they get Applecar build contract so worth a punt imho. Hyundai shot up when it was rumoured they would get Applecar but it wasn't to be.

Time will tell. I bought Prius 2 16 years ago and there was much scepticism then. Currently have a brilliant BMW X6 but would go back to Toyota fc/hybrid if/when the price is right
