The UK Government is actively supporting major AMD projects to expand the UK's sovereign Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructure. AMD has committed to a £2 billion investment in the UK over five years, partnering directly with various government departments, academia, and private organizations to bolster computing, scientific research, and workforce development. The key AMD-powered projects backed by the UK Government include:University of Cambridge Supercomputers:Zenith AI: A significant new UK AI-for-science platform designed and operated by the University of Cambridge, built with AMD and Dell technology. It is funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).Sunrise: A second AI supercomputer powered by AMD and Dell, owned by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and dedicated to nuclear fusion research. It is funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).Oriole Networks (ARIA Project): AMD is collaborating with British startup Oriole Networks on efforts to develop new AI networking technologies. This project, supported by the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA), aims to deploy the world's first large-scale AI system that uses light instead of electrical signals to move data between chips, vastly improving energy efficiency in UK data centres.Imperial College London Partnership: A joint initiative focused on accelerating computational science and research. The project encompasses healthcare innovation, climate modeling, AI optimization, and workforce development initiatives.Quantum Computing Data Centre: AMD is involved with British quantum computing firm OQC and JPMorganChase to test hybrid quantum-classical computing at OQC's Quantum-AI Data Centre in London.
