Lending, I also have what i call core holdings myself and as long as they are working for myself by paying a decent dividend without most importantly not losing capital then i hold and keep reinvesting dividends and topping up on lows, maybe do some tweaking now and again depending on how they are performing, they are lgen/aviv/mng/lloy/psn, although i do also have a couple of rotten apples i wish i had sold off years ago, the most rotten one has been Vodafone which has lost more money every year i have been invested there, one day i hope i will recover some of those losses, just saying the buy and hold strategy doesn't work with every share, if your capital is being eroded sometimes it's better to get rid, I have to say though i have had better total returns with international tracker funds than with shares over the last 5 years

Lending, sorry but i have to disagree with you, buy and hold long term is my strategy with my funds which are now 50% of my portfolio, but when it comes to individual shares they have to be monitored very carefully otherwise they can take you down with them, just take a look at vodafone/bt/lloy just to name a few the longer you would have been invested the more money you would have lost unless you were luck enough to buy at the bottom, lgen sp has also been declining it was over £3 a few years ago, i decided to sell a third of my lgen shares off just before exdiv and it turned out to be the right decision due to the amount it dropped, don't get me wrong lgen is still the largest share holding in my portfolio and i think it can bounce back in time, at least i hope it will, too many eggs in one basket can be ok until the day it no longer is ok, but it's only my opinion i realise others may differ

Gman, I definately didn't mean any disrespect, I get your point, but when you're of a certain age like myself, over 18 and been gifted with a bus pass lol, you want to make a profit now not in 25 years

GutterSnipe, you are spot on with that statement my friend, I've seen too many people from other boards being sentimental about a particular share, even though it may have been losing them money for years, the whole purpose of investing in the stock market is to get a better return than you can get in a bank, forget about what's happened 5 years ago or what might happen in 15 years time and stay focused on what's happening now and in the near future

Soton, same here also hold both, we have to admit though Aviva has been the winner out of the two, lgen's dropping sp means the dividend has been taken back off us, I hope things can improve here before the next exdivs

I have a much simpler way of working things out, if the dividend and share price increases it's a good investment, if the dividend and share price reduces it's not very good at all, also if the share price reduces more than the dividend that's not good, next year the share price will be halved so we are now depending on the share price to rise to make up for the dividend drop,the rest is Bollotics as Dan puts it, so let's hope this can start growing

Hi Craigb, my funds are lgen international index/fundsmith/fidelity index world/lgen future world/lgen global 100 index/lgen global technology/rathbone global oppurtunitys, if you look on hl site accumulated growth is around 80%, but of course i can't predict the next 5 years so the other 50% of my portfolio is in UK dividend shares

Well we are all different guys, for me it's a small number of reliable UK income shares and international tracker funds for growth

But as long are you are making a profit that's all that matters

Hi roofer, yes I agree lgen and aviv have been my most reliable income shares and I'm sure it will bounce back, just waiting the market reaction over the coming week and once it has settled down will be happy to add more

Roofer, the dividend is good but a falling sp then wipes out that dividend, total returns is what matters the most, waiting to see this settle down before adding

Gar, I can tell you for sure I will never make a profit here as I bought in 6 years ago, but if I can get a profit on my last 86p top up I will be happy with that
