RE: What is the appeal of HFEL?1 Nov 2022 16:44
Skier, You are right about the S&P 500. I keep the bulk of my money in a S&P 500 ETF (VUSA) and it has more or less doubled in the past five years. In fact, the S&P 500 has increased an average of 10% per year since its formation almost 100 years ago. It is also volatile if you want to turn your hand to day trading.
However, HFEL gives some diversification and we should look at it in the context that most funds and shares are down at the moment and I still believe it can be lucrative in the long haul. It could be worse, look at the fall SMT has had. It is probably 50% down from its peak.
