Only other thing to add is there will be trading fees to sell now and nothing on that score if you wait for the takeover to complete. The £10 involved to sell now was worth it to me to tie up a load of loose ends before my holidays.

Hello Chipper, I've sold my shares as I don't think there is anything to be gained by hanging around here. It's a fairly straightforward cash offer and at a fairly good premium to the price before the announcement of the to was made. The company doing the gobbling up have got some shares of the Directors and some of the institutional investors and it is unlikely there would be any rival bid. The share price of Northern Food, for example, hovered at or around the proposed takeover price for a long time. It's a long time ago now but as I recall there were two interested parties and one pulled out. There's no messy offer of a mix of cash and shares. In my limited experience of that type of scenario, if the takeover company is listed, its shares start to get shorted heavily. The bg proposal looked good but what price Shell now so it is not looking as good a deal as it once did. You are on reasonably safe ground in that it is very unlikely this deal will not proceed. Spare a thought for the poor holders of bpty who are told there is more than one suitor but the thing is dragging on and very little meaningful info is forthcoming from the board. The price there has actually dropped back considerably since the takeover announcement and the share can be traded as it is bobbing around enough for that. I'll share with you a little story about the takeover of encore oil. There was one bb leader who was hanging on till the bitter end to see if a rival bid came in and nothing was forthcoming. He then decided to sell out and I had to coax him onto the relevant bb to say he had changed his mind. No problem about the change of heart but if you have been on a bb non stop then it might be nice to let the readers know you have changed your mind. The reasons I actually did hang on until the bitter end there was to accept the option of shares rather than cash and just in case a rival bid did emerge. So often best just to take a lot of what you read on the bbs with a pinch of salt as you have no idea whether people are following their own advice. This one though seems an open and shut case to me. Bonz just remembered the £100 figure but £500 odd pound a lot more than lego - especially given the passage of time. I have to confess to shopping in Sainsburys most often - simply because the others are a lot further away and I can't keep my husband out of aldi and lidl because he is an accountant though not cima. Tells me if he is passing the door on business then he is not wasting fuel. Did a little check for you and it looks like you should have followed me to bovis in January and 2014's best performer was hoc - lol who says you can't make money on miners. I would never dream of taking a share tip from anybody or giving one to anybody. I spot something for myself and check the relevant bbs to see if anybody else has spotted the same thing. I couldn't tell you exactly how much I have in anything at the moment. I think bpty overall is my best performer of the year but it could have been kaz or debs or even flyb. Can't even remember last year maybe spd or tsb. I used to remember all the details of my investments right to the month and price bought. tht was never one of my bigger ones though. I think the maximum I ever had in here was three or four tranches after Christmas the year of the fall to 10p. End of school term's here and busy for that and other reasons. Aye but with Tesco vouchers little or nothing to pay to get in and there were lots of freebies as well as the chance to shop at the end. We spoke of the discount vouchers often on here. Most people with nominee accounts had to chase up the vouchers from the brokers. They couldn't be used on-line and some branches started to insist that they could be used on 3 for 2 deals or discounted items which meant that shareholders were often paying more for goods than other customers. Bonz being a financial whiz used his £5 off a £20 spend vouchers to buy gift cards/vouchers and then used the other denomination of vouchers when using the gift card/ voucher. Really didn't think they made the most of the Derbyshire factory to promote the company. We used Tesco clubcard vouchers to visit Cadbury's Bournville site. No idea if Mrs sid Madrid's job will be secure but she could take early retirement like the staff at the majority of their closed Ayrshire branches. I bought the limited edition Christmas tree baubles and teddies on their centenary year for a new born in the family and I have a numbered limited edition - only 250 made - wooden box of their Heritage collection. Paid about £100 for those and they still didn't let me win the Mother's day competition. Wonder if that box could be worth a few bob like the Queen's wedding cake in a few years eh. Read both your posts and yours in conjunction with your posting over on rr bonz. I must say you both took my breath away with your revelations of investments amounting to £100 and £405. So you had 7 ish shares here bonz and no scrip divis, rights issues etc. The stamp to post your divi must have been bigger than the cheque. Sid did alright though eh lego. Anyway a big thank you to Rongone for filling me in regarding the sudden departure of the CEO and the likely reason.

I suppose it's all about making money and I thought it had dropped too far in late April and admit to snatching a quick profit. Could have been more but my former brokers had problems one morning. Foolishly, I didn't sell all my Rolls Royce around the same time but I see a window there with a new chief executive about to take up post and their half year results quite soon after announcing record sized contract gains. Will look in again after my holidays. Weir is heavily shorted and there is often a volatility created by that. I would just reiterate though that I like to see new directors buy after a few months to instil some confidence in the company. I think that must be ironic. Bonz and I have been expecting this since Cadbury. Already commented on another bb a few weeks ago when the MPs for the area were expressing concern about jobs that it might be too late for thorntons. Thanks 2 reincarnated sad day for the UK. First bought tht in March 2010 about £1.23 around the same time as Samson I think. Watched it slide to 10p ish, axe the divi, close stores due to high rates etc. etc. and relying on the supermarkets and on-line now so this was the best outcome really. Doubt there will be a rival bid so no point hanging around really. Well done UK government, another one bites the dust. The ceo and directors will will alright - not sure about the staff.

Some trading opportunities here since Friday but no proper rebound back up over £1 to that £1.06 level. The whole thing is taking an eternity and the price action is not suggesting much of a premium if and when the takeover proceeds - or it is being made to look that way. Going to tread cautiously with this one now if I tread at all as I have lots of other shares on a watchlist. Good luck to all holding.

They obviously considered the threat of a takeover to that position as very real and that is the only crumb of comfort I can provide at the moment Crookman. I'd like to say this is as bizarre as it can get with takeovers but I have seen even more strange shenanigans with others. atb

Yesterday's share price meant that there were people in the know about today's announcement. Have you asked yourself what it is you want here. Do you want cash or do you want a mix of cash and shares in some other company. Got the latter with shares lots of times and the shares of the companies doing the takeover have usually disappointed. Looked at 888 this morning. Not a queue of buyers there is there. See what other official info gets out. Good luck and maybe goodbye.

On 31st May I asked "After the initial surge on the definite takeover news, this price has been pure pants. Not looking anything like a share at the centre of a takeover battle to me. In short, why is the price not higher." I guess we know now. Ironically this share is one of my best performers of the year with a divi thrown in. 6th Sense comes to many of us over time with takeovers.

I was winding up the estates of very wealthy spinster sisters - one a school teacher and one a medical general practitioner and tobacco shares had made them very wealthy ladies along with a very generous offer for their House of Fraser shares. They led very frugal life styles which is often the case. Admit to feeling just a little uncomfortable with dge shares in the past week or so and - apart from debs - lad at the start of the year and bpty has made more money for me than the others and more than I expected with a divi on the latter as well but not at all easy with it. But I'm that sort. I watched a tv programme about children needing extensive dentisty and spent the rest of the night thinking about the thorntos shares I had. I think bonz invests in tobacco and we each must do our own thing and satisfy our own consciences. Have a good evening all.
