I have invested both my money and my wifes money in RR over the last few years and have done very well (like many other members of this board). My wife is sensible. My wife wanted our money protected for the “what if” moment. I explained stops to her in order to avail her worry and she insisted I put them on… My better half wanted them putting on at 10% below current value (we decided on stops when the SP was C£8). After watching the share slide close to 10% down a few weeks previously (for absolutely no apparent reason) I wanted them a bit lower… The last thing I wanted was some automated sell when I knew in my heart the SP would recover. I ended up putting the stops at 780…. The trump turbulence started when we were on holiday and the main 10% drop coincided with a 10 hour flight we were on. EVERYTHING was sold at (or around) 780. My pension only managed to get 769 (I’m guessing as it was a large trade and the SP was falling quickly this is the best they could get….). Obviously I was in the doghouse for putting the stops too low…. (I’ve learned a valuable lesson) – however I still stand by my reasoning (privately…). I then spent the whole weekend praying the SP would get hammered again on Monday to allow me to buy back more shares than I’d sold and “profit” from the situation (thankfully this happened and I managed to increase my shares).

Putting a stop on does not mean you get that price (I’ve heard of “guaranteed” stops which I think you pay for – to the best of my knowledge my broker doesn’t offer these.

Being out of the market and praying the share you’ve loyally followed for the past 3 years to fall further is not a nice feeling.

I’m sure there are clever ways you can use stops… but in my mind they are almost more hassle than they are worth. The fact that the stops I use aren’t even guaranteed makes me think twice about using them again… although obviously this time I will bow to my wife’s better judgement….

Long term this is an £8 share all day long. With SMR and narrow body waiting in the wings - along with some potentially very large orders (if they can get their time on the wing in "sandy" countries sorted) it's a £12 - £14 share. Paper losses are painful but the fundamentals haven't changed. The doomsday scenario would be trump screwing up the markets and RR announcing a massive issue with an engine.... thankfully we've avoided this - I often think what could really screw up the RR fairytale?? - Massive engine fault / putin setting off a tactical nuke / huge recession / Covid part 2..... trumps tariffs, whilst potentially causing the world to head into recession, are just (in my opinion) a blip. It's a war he can't win - he'll back down in the coming weeks (claiming victory) - What I don't think he has factored into his equations is the MASSIVE level of distrust he has stirred up - But that's not for RR to worry about - that's very much a US problem...

"Overhauling agriculture" reminded me of something I saw the other day... Potash is essential for agriculture and Canada is the largest producer of said substance. The US might want to think twice about who they pick their fights with....

Trump / the US CANNOT win the tarriff battle - all they are doing is alienating the whole world (apart from Putin.... :-)). They are severely sullying their standing... and all for what? So trump and his minions can make money on the stock market? So the economy crashes allowing trump to refinance the nations debt at a more affordable rate? So trump can brag to his golfing buddies he's got China by the cahones (he hasn't). What started as brinksmanship is going to end with the US ostracised by the rest of the world with an economy in the gutter. IT IS UTTER MADNESS. On a brighter note I don't see RR being unduly affected long term - unless this leads to a worldwide recession....

The inevitable U turn has been touted by Hassett....

Apparently trump's advisor Hassett is suggesting trump may be looking at a 90 day pause in tarriffs (apart from China) - Musk is also taking a non-tarriff stance.... All this commotion and turmoil and now a U-turn. trump flexing US muscles to try and force through better trading terms.

You won't be surprised to hear that the reply is got from Jonathan Davies MP with regards to when the actual fcuk the Govt was going to announce them was a carefully worded pile of drivel that said precisely nothing....

Investorintheknow - yes, I read one theory was he was trashing the economy in order to get more favorable terms to refinance the debt. Personally I don't buy into this theory. I think he's trashing the economy because he's incompetent. Whilst his actions could, in theory, create a mega economy there are 2 major things that stifle this. Firstly the pain the US will have to endure in order to achieve it's aim is immense (inflation, stock market crashes etc etc). Secondly he is alienating the rest of the world. His only ally at the moment is..... Russia ??????? I can't see this continuing. He's got to perform a u turn.

Such a shame Charlie / the UK has to demean itself in order to obtain a trade deal. Good of Charlie to take one for the team.

Tufans been mentioning it for a long time. I think an announcement with some specific dates/ partners / airframes will give the SP a jolt.

Just looked at the after market prices in the US.... absolute carnage. Apple -7%, nvidia -5.7%, amazon -6%. Even if the 10% means the UK dodged a bullet (what did Starmer promise trump / give trump in return????), and even if RR won't be materially affected because people lease engines rather than buy them we all know RR historically gets dragged down when other markets / shares suffer. Can't see it being a pleasant day tomorrow. I hope I'm wrong. I still think long term there shouldn't be any issues - RR's fundamentals are still excellent and there's plenty more positives to come out this year..... but Thursday could be a bloodbath.

I heard an expert talking about the rare earth metals deal on a podcast. There aren't $500bn worth of minerals there. Trump just wanted some meat to throw to his base. I trust Starmer had given him some spoiled venison rather than prime fillet to throw to his base on our behalf.

It did cross my mind that Starmer may have sold us out in order to escape the orange ones tarriffs but I still ant see RR getting anything but the majority of the SMR contract. Trump always wants a deal as he thinks he's an amazing businessman (Ukraines rare earth minerals deal etc, etc). In order to avoid getting hit by substantial tarriffs Starmer must have e offered him something (and i don't think visiting Charlie quite cuts it).

short term this will be up and down like a *****s draws... however long term rr still has excellent fundamentals.... and some good stuff happening this year. i cann imagine if i was day trading i'd be sweating like a gypsy with a mortgage.

Any ideas what the late surge was all about?
