Yes, humans will be shown to have made a big mistake in burning fossil fuels the way they are, but deforestation and other non-environmental activities don't help either, so where to start.

We can't just switch-off burning oil, as civilisation would come to an abrupt halt, with all the unrest that would create with 7 or 8 billion of us struggling to survive.
In the mean time, we've got to carry on with what we know to be a crazy and destructive energy policy and not being dependent on dodgy supplying countries is at least a small comfort.

As for our "ambulance chasing" claim, after a democratic decision in Italy, that's not the point either. The Italians are welcome to decide not to ruin their country, but their government shouldn't have encouraged a small foreign company to invest in their oil/gas industry and then change the rules without offering compensation and that's what the ECT is all about.

So, SBprint, you've got a very warped view of the situation, but at least it gave us a diversion from the usual "dog" and "pile of crap" rubbish from the resident idiots.

I also hope that Trump & Iran don't lose their heads and take us all over a cliff that no one wants, but whatever happens with the current tension over the Gulf of Oman, it must serve as a warning to those vetting the Export Credit funding application, that relying too much on oil and gas supplied from turbulent regions could be very dangerous, especially if the UK succeeds in going alone.

Very good point LTT, which we should understand and definitely respect, instead of the noise posted here by the impatient and moaners.

I don't think we should get too hung-up on the fossil fuel argument, which we all know.

Humanity has right royally effed itself up by relying too much on fossil fuels to provide a more comfortable life than any previous generation has enjoyed. We aren't prepared to accept a drop in that standard and millions of others around the World can only dream of achieving a fraction of the standard living we enjoy, which they can all now see on their smartphones and TVs.

We know we've got to get off the fossils ASAP if the planet's going to survive, but we also know that we can't do it just now, otherwise civilisation collapses - bit like at the crucial moment in a shag, even if you need to stop, just got to carry on a bit longer!!

So it is with fossil fuels - humanity will probably be using it for decades, if not indefinitely and so oil/gas suppliers won't be going out of business for a while yet. Just think of all that needs replacing before oil becomes redundant.

Therefore, while David Attenborough and Theresa makes all the right climate change noises in public, those behind the scenes still have to plan to keep the lights on for decades to come, preferably with energy supplied form reliable sources.

I agree up to a point, but this isn't funding a Russian project, but a very British project, which would help secure UK energy security.

Not wishing ill on anyone, but today's attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman (following attacks on 4 ships in May) will help focus the minds of those deciding on whether to approve EC funding for the SL project.

Quite a few oil "experts" continue to maintain that US fracking is an illusion, which despite all the claims, still isn't profitable.

One story doing the rounds is that the continued investment in US fracking is to help undermine the PoO, which in turn puts the screws on Putin, for whom it's virtually his only source of income.
