Time to accept fracking in NT

THE NT Government’s decision today to remove its fracking ban will likely not be the news many Territorians want to hear when waking up this morning.
The issue, as confirmed by long-term and respected Territorian Ken Parish, has been one of the most divisive and emotive in our history. But when proceeding with allowing the extraction of onshore shale gas we must consider what is best for the Territory and the people living in it.
An independent inquiry prepared by Justice Rachel Pepper found any risks can be mitigated, or removed completely, if her 135 recommendations are followed.
The Gunner Government will likely accept all of those recommendations today, and its first task will be to ensure every one of those will be regulated and overseen without exception. More importantly, any company that transgresses these restrictions must be punished forcefully, as they risk not only the environment but also the economic future of a viable Territory industry.
The Gunner Government’s decision today is a smart one for the Territory. It will provide jobs, revenue and flow-on wealth for our future. Anti-frackers have their hearts in the right place. They want the same thing as the pro-frackers and other Territorians who support the fracking industry: a happy, healthy place to live.
It is now time to move on together. The Gunner Government has taken advice from numerous experts in the field. It has accepted an independent inquiry by a former Supreme Court justice and enforced her recommendations.
It has conducted intensive consultation with the community.
The CLP, which has spoken with the same groups, also supports the industry.
The umpire has made its call and it’s time to get fracking.
