The CWU have just released a podcast on revisions, the shorter working week, the trust survey, part time workers, agency staff and holiday pay.
I have also just received news that all part time workers and agency staff on our night shift (accounting for just over 50% of the night shift OPG work) have been offered the opportunity to go to full time permanent which could potentially yield massive cost savings.
An agreement on holiday pay has also been agreed with back pay going back two years.

Mail volumes including parcels are dropping off in my office and the night shift have cleared their work every night for the last six weeks whereas before they were handing parcels over to the early shift every morning.
If beatrootjuice is correct with "it tends to reflect the shape of the business a few months ago" then the SP should start dropping back a little by the end of June?

RM will indeed make a return to the FTSE100 but for how long?
If RM were a top flight football team then they would be like Fulham or Brentford so I will give RM four seasons in the top flight.......summer, autumn, winter and spring.

Has this SP peaked now that it has been announced that RM will be joining the FTSE100 or could we possibly anticipate another increase next week on the back of the dividend?

beatrootjuice, I am in agreement with you on this. Covid has been an immense opportunity for RM but for the UK operation it has also been a great opportunity to sweep some things under the carpet. Quality of service has totally gone out of the window along with some aspects of health and safety.
I walked into our sorting hall at 6am this morning and it was silent and deserted. No letters or parcels. A 100% clearance from our night shift and all without a parcel machine!

Wolves, regarding parcels, my office is also showing a sharp decline over the last couple of weeks. It might be the usual mid-month drop off and then pick up again once pay packets have landed? We shall see.

Once again, very true but you have to ask yourself how a Dutch parcel delivery company with 17,000 employees can turn a bigger profit than a UK only based parcel company with 140,000 employees.
My concern is that, even if UK consumers continue to carry on with their online shopping habits, the UK based operation will not be as efficient as it should be and by 2024/25 when RM have 90% UK parcel automation capacity it may just be too late?

It's true that RMG posted over £700m profit, however over 50% of that was down to GLS?

Schnarff, the two extra hubs should certainly help but my main concern is the timeframe involved.
My journey to work includes cycling past an Amazon depot. I watched this huge automated warehouse being built and it took around 26 weeks before it was operational. It was a real eye opener as to what could be achieved.
My office has been talking about building an extension for around 6 years and it was announced just before Christmas that building work would commence in the spring of 2022 and be operational by Christmas 2022.
Why does it take RM so much longer to achieve the same thing and meanwhile, are we going to struggle to keep up with the competition?

An extract from today's work time learning brief.
"The Parcel Sortation Machine (PSM) is a major part of Royal Mail’s commitment to competing in the parcels market.
Over the last five years we have successfully deployed 20 PSMs in 16 plants around the UK and have recently
commenced the roll out of a further four PSMs at four more of our plants.
As you will have seen in yesterday’s full year results announcement, we need a step change in parcel sorting
automation to allow us to increase our capacity, improve quality and enable even later acceptance times for our retail customers.
Our PSMs have vastly increased our efficiency in sorting parcels and have been a key element of the company’s
improved performance over the last 12 months - we currently sort 33% of our parcels automatically, however our aim is to get to the industry benchmark of 90% as soon as we can.
We’ve announced today that by the end of 2021/22 we’ll increase the number of parcel sorting machines in our
network from 20 to around 30 and want to reach at least 50% of parcels sorted automatically".
So, over the next 18 months RM will be ramping up from 33% to 50%. At a growth of 17% per annum, RM will not hit 90% parcels automation until 2025 but will it be too little too late to keep ahead of the competition?

I find that this SP is almost impossible to call. It's just as likely to drop back to £4.75 as it is to hit £6.

If the adjusted operating profit for 2020/21 exceeds £700m then I would certainly expect to see an increase in the SP especially with a one off dividend payment of 10p which is less than 2% of the current SP but higher than the current interest rate so everyone's a winner.

JB, because you have always been a "positive" poster, I read your message as you had intended it to be received without a second thought but having read all the posts again I can now see how TonyS has misconstrued the first sentence, which is unfortunate.
