This could be a double edged sword for RM.
On the on hand it needs to do the correct thing for it's employees and customers but it could see large swathes of the workforce in mandatory self isolation due to the "close contact" rule which could be costly to RM. Having said that we are in the middle of the biggest threat to the health of the population since possibly the black plague so to pit health versus wealth is not right.
As a social experiment it may prove highly valued as RM extends to every corner of the UK and would provide an excellent insight into regional trends for asymptomatic carriers.

Shaunymac, even if the next trading update is not great I can't see the SP taking a hit now. Confidence seems to be on the up.

JB, if my memory serves me correctly, the offer of a 6% pay deal over 3 years was Rico's little twist and included 2018/19, 2019/20 and 2020/21 financial years?

Is the cost of this year's pay deal factored in?
If RM are going to give 2.7% backdated to April 2020 plus 1% in April 2021 (not to mention the one hour reduction in October 2021 which is technically a 2.5% pay increase just not in monetary value) then this is going to be quite costly. Back of a cigarette packet calculations mean that someone on £25k would receive an extra £930 a year. Multiply that by 130,000 (approx) CWU grade employees and that amounts to a whopping £120m a year on the wage bill which will balance out the £130m that RM have saved on managerial redundancies.
Add to that the £128m loss from the first half of the financial year and that's a lot of ground to make up.

Phunt73, my mail centre also slowed down last week. Noticeably less parcels and packets plus letters back to the same levels as last autumn. We still have quite a few Angard staff on nights and the weekend but I'm not sure why?

Given the amount of expenditure on PPE, Angard staff, vehicle hire, outbuilding hire and staff on sick leave or isolation then if UKPIL can show a profit the SP will surely fly however I'm not optimistic and think that teslo's prediction may be correct.

onesharewonder, it seems that the move towards parcels automation will not be a quick one. My mail centre has given notice of intent to remove another sorting machine before Easter which will decrease letter sorting capacity however there are no plans to install a parcel machine in 2021 so it looks as though we are making more room for a larger manual operation with more bull rings and more Angard staff.

Dynamo, I work in a mail centre. The caller's office is only open Monday to Saturday and I don't recall ever having a RM delivery on a Sunday for letters or parcels although Amazon, DPD, Herpes and Yodel are frequently in my area.
Our Saturday and Sunday night shift operation is manual parcel sorting which is done by managers, Angard and a handful of volunteers to empty the Covid-19 boxes.
I assume that each area is different depending upon customer needs so a change to 7 day working will be significant.

I thought that you of all people would have been watching the CWU Facebook sessions on the 'Pathway to Change' over the last week? The sessions where TP and DW have said that they had secured a very good pay deal but that the workforce need to embrace change including 7 day working. Quite clearly the CWU know that "Massive, massive change coming" and are trying to grab the bull by the horns.

Scamp, I don't know how many board members it would need to ratify the sale of GLS but if that were to happen then many investors can say goodbye to any thoughts of a dividend. As for the SP?
As I have said before, I can't see RMG selling their cash cow as it would certainly be an act of self harm but c'est la vie as they say in Peckham.

I can appreciate that jobs may go in mail centres but we still need a large delivery workforce to cover the nation so unless the government decide to pull the plug on the USO then status quo remains.
Selling off GLS? Why would RM sell off their cash cow? It doesn't make sense.

davemk115, I think that the replacement workforce will be Angard staff. My office on the late shift is currently around 50% Angard and 50% RM staff. Many Angard staff are also trained on certain machine operations.

Any reason for the SP drop at 14:30 today? I also noticed that the FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 dropped at the same time.

Thev2.7% backdated plus an hour looks good on paper but what strings are attached? I know that there were Zoom sessions and briefings for CWU reps last Thursday and Friday and these were split into 4 different units so I would imagine that each unit will have different strings so we need to wait for the details.
The Deliveries, Processing, Distribution and Logistics Briefing will probably be pivotal as this covers the majority of CWU members. MDEC, Parcelforce, Fleet and Engineering probably only account for about 3%?
