A government spokesman said: "The universal service obligation, which currently sets out that Royal Mail must deliver letters six days a week, is set out in legislation. Any permanent changes would be for Parliament to agree. We have not received a request to change the obligation".
"We have noted Ofcom's updated findings on postal services, and will consider them carefully."
"At present, Royal Mail's universal service obligation means it has to deliver letters for six days per week and parcels for five days".
So (if approved) to drop letters to a 5 days a week service in line with parcels would mean that RM would have no obligation for a weekend service however it's fairly obvious that there needs to be a 7 days a week parcel service in order to keep abreast of the competition.
RM senior managers now have to make some very difficult decisions for the future business model whilst convincing the UK government that the service is still viable given the constraints of the USO.
It would be interesting to see how Bezos would deal with the same situation?
