merlwood, so are you seriously saying that a group of, as described on here, low skilled workers, whose union gave notice on the 27th of September (seven weeks) regarding strike action up until Christmas Eve, which is above and beyond the fourteen days notice legally required, have phucked the country, ruined small businesses and ruined Christmas?
What I find incredible is that, in the face of the known facts, the general population still decided to use a courier that publicised all of the strike dates on its website plus all of the media coverage, well in advance and still the general population failed to take alternative action.
Please remember, as our CEO reminds us regularly, Royal Mail is not the only courier service in the UK and the customer always has a choice.
A failure to plan is a plan to fail.....

On the subject of Christmas cheer, there's plenty of reports doing the rounds about mail centres clearing their backlogs yesterday and Thompson has been pictured on the Royal Mail employees social media app with a clear office in the background. Hopefully this will calm the concerns from SME owners who were claiming that their goods wouldn't be delivered in time?

Talking about "getting this sorted", it looks as though there is light at the end of the tunnel for the customers? My home mail centre is almost clear today and the chaos looks like a normal December late shift. The backlog of around 800 York containers that was in our outbuilding has now disappeared overnight.

"War chest" as you well know was not coined by me but in an "interview" between the IDS chairman and the Torygraph. I'm not sure if the Torygraph were intending to make the BoD look as though they had the cash to crush the union, ride out the strikes and save Christmas but unfortunately some of the general public also take the alternative view that something must be amiss if the company is saying it's losing £1m+ a day and then saying that it has a pot of gold put aside. Judging by the comments, there is also a fair percentage of the general public that still thinks that RM UK are owned by the Post Office or still a public concern which is strange.

RT, yes I would love to throw my dosh at this however a business that claims to be losing £1m+ a day but is prepared to use a "£1.7bn war chest" to crush the union and the spirit of it's employees is a cause for concern?
I think that the market will be wary of this stock for a couple of months until there is some stability. In the meantime, I predict that it may drop some more. All in my opinion of course.

RMG AND CWU JOINT STATEMENT FOR AN INTERIM STEP TOWARDS A FULL AGREEMENT (COVERING ROYAL MAIL, PARCELFORCE AND FLEET)

Introduction
RMG and CWU have agreed the following which demonstrates significant progress towards resolving the current disputes, enabling the cancellation of the strikes planned for 23rd/24th December and the implementation of a period of calm until the 16th January 2023, to resolve all outstanding issues and conclude a final agreement. These further talks will be facilitated by ACAS.
Both parties confirm this Joint Statement has the full support of the RMG Executive Board and CWU Postal Executive.
Job Security Commitments
RMG guarantee that the changes needed to transform the business will not involve any compulsory redundancies, including arising from proposed site closures.
To facilitate this job security guarantee, RMG confirm they will:
Cease all agency staff
Not increase owner drivers above the current 25% limit in Parcelforce, with no extension of owner drivers into Royal Mail
Not recruit new entrants on lower terms and conditions.

The Cessation of Managerial Executive Action
The company commit to ceasing all managerial executive action and to work with the union on all revision activity as set out below.
Agreed Revisions Activity
Revisions will be undertaken in line with the Pathway to Change Agreement and will be specifically based on “workload”. These revisions will be undertaken at pace for introduction prior to the new financial year. The IR Framework Agreement will apply in full, supported by agreed functional guidelines.
Pay for 2022 and from 1st April 2023
The holistic settlement for pay will amount to 9% in total (fully consolidated) spread out over an 18-month period with all monies in respect of the 3.5% fully backdated to 1st April 2022. The staging of these payments will be subject to further negotiations. The new pay review date will be 1st October 2023.
Pipeline Change - Start and Finish Times
RMG confirm they will not abandon the AM delivery period as part of any future plans and will not turn Royal Mail into a separate standalone parcel courier company.
RMG also confirm they are willing to jointly approach the Government with CWU to discuss how best to sustain the existing universal service obligation, alongside the development of new products and services to expand the role of postal workers.
These commitments will ensure pipeline changes and start & finish times are driven by opportunities for growth, the need to maintain the USO and also provide CWU members/employees with an appropriate work life balance. The details of these will be subject to further negotiations.

DillyD, that's a bit harsh. I try not to have any views on religion on personal grounds plus it's always going to be a quick route to an argument but I have never understood why Christmas is celebrated more vigorously than Easter?

So you have increased your prices and increased your contractors salaries; that's good but how do you imagine that you could sell your products and services to people who now have less to spend?
Those at the top will always have 99% of the wealth but it's up to those at the bottom to ensure that the remaining 1% of the wealth remains fluid? Metaphorically, if I can't afford to pay you then you then you won't be able to pay your contractors and so on...
