King, I don't think Vlad has lost the plot. See what Trump recently said about Vlad in that regard. He's smart and very switched on. However I agree. Dang hard to agree with an invasion even if there was cold war-esque provocations. However however. Putin was smart to take advantage of a weak POTUS, a fragmented leaderless NATO, a bumbling Bojo, a Macron with aspirations of being Jupiter, a thoroughly energy compromised and dearmed Germany etc etc. Only thing Putin got wrong (in a military sense inb4 moral peral clutching) imo was the level of tenacity the average Ukrainain would show in defending their lands.
That said there anit a snowball in hells chance of Ukraine standing aginst Russia no matter how many NATO toys are sent their way. It simply cannot be the case in an objective sense of military matters. As I said yesterday occupation is an entirely different kettle of fish but some commentators really shoudd bear in mind that east of Dniper Ruskies find favour still amongst the locals, not so on the West. Almost as if demographics are a lot more important than some would like to concede.
SO basically as much as one can, legitimately, argue against Putins decision to invade it is not the machinations of a mad man. Quite the inverse, tis the decision of a highly logical mind. Further I should point out that Putin is not all powerful within Russia. He signed off on plans presented to him by others within the Kleptocracy Putin set up during the waning days of Yeltsins Presidential rule and has only being reinforced since.
While I agree that Putin is a wrong to lament the passing of the USSR I do bear in mind he is the leader of a country that increasingly suffers from nostalgia for bygone times much like it could be said MAGAists and Brexiters did. And I say that as someone who identifies as both.
So is it really mad that long running leader of a country that is a shadow of it's former self harbours desires for old glories? Not really. But it's also not reality, those times are gone.
Or are they... we like to think that because it's present year that somehow intrisic human nature has changed.
Yeah well. Here's an annecdote from Putins childhood. He grew up in a single room apartment with his parents and in an autogiograhpery commissioned when Putin was made Prime Minister out of no where Putins tells the tale of how he learnt to never corner the rat in his room as whent he rat was backed into a corner that was when it would jump at you.
I trust people realise why I recount this Putin childhood yarn. Russia has been backed into a corner and Putin has acted as he has thought best fit (jumping) as so have his politbuero. Agree or disagree, tis not the machinations of an unhinged mind. If it was Putin backed into a corner he'd have called in old favours, eg Bill Clinton paid 500k to speak for 45 minutes at a Rosatom dinner event, to flee to the west from a population out for him after years of feathering his own nest. That is not the case
