The 750k figure is lazy reporting; 750k will come off fixed price mortgage deals this year. Some will be able to afford higher interest rates; some will have enough equity to change to interest only mortgages on their next fix, and others will extend the term of their mortgage to make the repayments at higher interest rates more affordable. And some will be fücked.

Banks do not want to force fire sales, as it destroys the equity underpinning their loans; and they do not want to be painted as the problem by politicians yet again.

Credit card borrowing is at levels last seen in 2004 - consumer spending is going to wimper out.

I go even further, people at state pension age should not be exempt from employer's NI. When the tax and NI system was established, it made sense for people not to have to pay NI when retired, as their life expectancy was much shorter and medical interventions were cheaper.

Now people live longer and keeping them alive costs more. If they had been paying for private insurance, the insurance company would be bankrupt. Old folks have underpaid for what they are now getting, so should be asked to pay more instead of pushing the burden onto the next generations.

A more equitable society is a happier society...

You cannot spend it if you are dead... funding the health service really is a life and death matter. The current GOV is trying to make GOV redundant; they do not have a mandate for stripping the state to the bare bones, and their plans should be resisted.
