RE: Meter manufacturer reports India have.....28 Mar 2021 14:27
Good afternoon all,
As I mentioned on Friday, Conventional and Smart meters have been manufactured and installed by some meter manufacturers in India, for some time. And I see that happening into the future. Because there will be a market potential for both types of meter, until the GoI and Utilities decide they can afford the upgrade to Smart meters, to various rural regions, which will take time. The " duel approach," as I put it on Friday.
Because of the very nature of a Conventional meter, this will be manufactured and installed at a faster, cheaper rate, than a Smart meter. Because the Conventional meter does not require the infrastructure investment that " smart " meters do.
But there seems to be a change in the pattern of mix - Conventional meters v Smart meters - that has been tendered, from what is going to be tendered, from one particular meter manufacturer, who manufactures/provides both types of meter.
The product mix for current, live tenders, was approximately 66% for Conventional meters, to approximately 34% for Smart meters. This percentage is the accumulated value that is attributed to the meters. Not the number of meters produced. The percentage of actual numbers of meters produced may be slightly different, because the price of the different type of meters will also be different.
You do not get as many Smart meters per Rupee, as you do Conventional meters.
For the yet to be quoted tenders, the balance seems to have changed, to approximately 55% of tenders for Smart meters and approximately 45% for Conventional meters, for the next phase of tendering for this particular manufacturer. This is also the percentage of the value of the tenders. Not the number of meters produced for Conventional and Smart meters.
Whether this change will continue to gain pace generally, among different manufacturers, as yet, remains to be seen. But it seems encouraging.
At least to me.
LTI.
