p. 9. The graphs show annual and peak day gas requirements both higher in 2030 than now, which is opposite to the stated intention of decreasing reliance upon gas by switching to renewables.
p. 24. Target is 80% of electricity generated from renewable energy sources by 2030. How is that going to happen? I don't see anywhere in this report that someone has already placed orders for the vast quantity of PV panels & wind turbines necessary for this, bearing in mind the multi-year full order books, nor do I see a map of the proposed sites, nor that the long wrangling over planning permissions has started, nor do I see any indication of the vast likely cost, and how it is going to be financed. They are living in fairyland, or is that leprechaun-land.
p. 25. "The Policy Statement confirmed that whilst no new authorisations for new exploration will be granted, existing authorisations are not affected by this change. Holders of existing authorisations can continue to apply to progress through the standard licensing lifecycle stages towards a natural conclusion, which may include expiry, relinquishment, or production. Any applications for follow-on authorisations or applications to undertake offshore activities under an authorisation are subject to Ministerial consent and must continue to meet environmental, technical, and financial criteria as appropriate."
p. 25 - 6. No fracked gas. Are they not aware that the UK, supplying currently 75% of Irish gas, rising to 90% by 2030, is now allowing fracking? Is someone going to sit beside the pipeline sniffing, and saying yes or no to that day's supply?
p. 39. Am I alone in finding it odd that the five 'disaster' scenarios, on which they base emergency energy requirements, are presented as if exclusive from one another? Surely the most likely reason for scenarios 2-5 (failure of interconnectors or disruption of gas supply from UK), is their Scenario 1, an unusually harsh winter. So where is the most likely disaster of Scenario 6, a harsh winter resulting in failure of supply? The answer is probably that they do not wish to present the possibility of 100,000 deaths due to incompetence and lack of forward planning in what is purported to be an advanced economy.
