On Wall St stocks came under pressure late on after showing a lack of direction for much of the session. The major averages slid into negative territory after spending most of the day bouncing back and forth across the gain line. Dow futures see a weak start for stocks at open calling for a 160 drop. The DJI is down 239 points this week.
Investor hopes for a 25bp cut in Nov were dampened when Powell said rate cuts were not a top priority. On the economy jobless claims dropped 4000 to a seasonally adj 217,000 for the week ended Nov 9. Layoffs have remained historically low which is underpinning the economy.
Stocks ended the day just off lows. On the big board 18 finished in the red led down by Salesforce, Cisco & UH. Going up Disney, Chevron, Apple & Nvidia ($146) holding top spot on the most valuable company leaderboard. Among the S&P 11 major sectors Industrials was the bigest decliner with some of the bigest drops from defence companies, RTX Corp
and General Dynamics.
Motors suffered a bout of profit taking, Tesla ($308) fell 6% when Reuters announced Trumps transition team is planning to kill the $7500 consumer tax credit for EV purchases as part of a broader tax reform legislation. Rivian Autos dropped 14% to $10•25
on further consideration of the $5bn tie-up with VW.
