Wall St stocks fell yesterday as a rally ran out of steam following lackluster economic data. Trump told CNBC he plans fresh tariffs on imported pharmaceutical
products and semi conductors. He also said he expects to raise tariffs on Indian imports due to the country's purchases of Russian oil. Investors also digested an index of US services activity barely in growth mode as companies contend with weaker hiring conditions and stagflation worries.
Companies reporting inc YUM Brands ($139) parent of Taco Bell, Pizza Hut & KFC whose 2Q nos missed due to steep trade duties and CAT warned US tariffs would pose significant challenges in H2 and cost it up to $1β’5bn this year. Shares ended u/c at $435. Even Ai chip stock AMD a top 50 global Co reported disappointing data center revenue sending the stock down $11 to $163. However AMD is up 44% ytd.
This is the tail end of Q2 earnings season in which 80% of the S&P500 have beaten forecasts, two of the Big Board companies will report today, WD & McD. On the Dow 12 of the 30 posted gains led by UH, 3M & Chevron. Propping up the decliners Msoft, McD and Salesforce. Top of the 'Hot' stocks parade inc Palantir, UH, Pfizer, Cat, Ford & Smith & Nephew.
Seasonally this is the weakest period for stock mrkt returns and some analysts expect a pullback of between 7%-15% by mid October. Nevertheless the Dow and 500 are ahead 4% & 7% with the Nsdq outpacing both up 10% ytd.
