Japanese & Australian mrkts hit all-time highs this morning after news that the US & China agreed to extend their tariff-truce for another 90 days. The Nikkei is up over 1200 points and a point below 43,000, while the ASX200 climbs 25 to 8871. Also optimism over a Sept rate cut of 25bp is aiding market sentiment. Traders and investors await US consumer price inflation nos for July due today.
On Wall St stocks showed a lack of direction over the day bouncing back & forth across the unchanged line eventually closing in negative territory. On the Dow which fell 200 P&G, UH & 3M led the (11) risers while CAT, IBM & Salesforce propped up the laggards. Citigroup & US Global Research became the latest brokerages to raise their year end targets for the S&P.
Stocks in focus included Micron Tech ($124) which raised its Q4 revenue forecast as prices for its DRAM products improved and the broader memory market shows signs of recovery. TKO group jumped 10% after Paramount bought the rights to distribute UFC events for the next 7 years in a deal worth $7•7bn. Shares put on $17 to a ytd high of $180.
Big gainer on the 500 was Albemarle ($81) the world's largest producer of lithium for batteries whose stock rose after a key Chinese maker of lithium-ion suspended production. Lithium-ion a key component in E/Vehicle batteries has seen prices soar above $11,000 a metric ton this year, a far cry from peak levels of $80,000 when demand outstripped supply and Albemarle traded at over $300.
Many analysts think Wall St is heading for a reality check as many large cap stocks are trading at nosebleed valuations and by several methods stocks haven't been this highly valued since 2021. The S&P posted 15 new 52wk highs and 17 new lows. Vols were light at 15•5bn traded.
