If you added together the value of our 4 bigest companies (AZN, HSBC, SHELL & UNLVR) they would rank at no 12 on the global list some $3•590bn less than Nvidia.

Nvidia reported revs & earnings that topped expectations and said sales growth will remain above 50% as demand for Ai shows no signs of fading. However the stock which is up 35% ytd fell in extended trade as data centre revenues came up short for the second straight period.

The board has approved an additional $60bn buyback in addition to the $9•6bn in its stock this quarter. Nividia has 24•4bn shares in issue. Shares closed down $6 to $176. Of the 10,578 global companies listed Nvidia retains its No 1 spot of bigest company by mrkt value.

Other major companies reporting included America's largest retailer Walmart who increased sales and annual profits. The company said it earned $7•03bn for the July quarter as sales rose 5%. A growing list of firms inc P&G, Black & Decker & Ralph Lauren have told investors they plan to raise prices due to tariffs. Target ($98) the beleaguered 'hyperstore' said a new CEO will take over in Sept after reporting another Q of declining sales & net income. 2Q eps slipped from $2•57 to $2•05.

On the Dow 22 of the 30 gained on the session led by Salesforce, Chevron & UH. Heading down Merck, Nike & Honeywell. Economic events slated for today inc Jobless claims, GDP Q on Q

personal consumption nos and Home Sales month on month. Oil prices fell as the summer driving season draws to a close. Brent futures dipped 31c to $68 and crude inventories fell by 2•4m barrels. Brent is down 11% ytd.

Finally, US tariffs on goods from India doubled at midnight ET as Trump followed through on his threat to raise levies on the country because of its purchases of Russian oil. Mrkts in India we're closed for a local holiday.

Morning all.

After a choppy start to trading yesterday where the index slipped to 45,192 the market about turned at lunch finally closing up 136 to 45,418. Of the top 30 stocks 13 posted gains led by Boeing, Cisco & Amex while Salesforce, UH and Nike propped up the losers.

News that Boeing ($235) has rec'd an order from Korean Air for 100 aircraft worth c.$50bn sent the stock to the top of the big board. Boeing also inked in a 20 year maintenance contract. Shares in EchoStar flew up 70% to $55 after AT&T said it will buy some of its wireless spectrum licences in a $23bn deal and Ford Motor ($11•85) said Trump tariffs will cost it an additional $2bn in costs this year.

On the tariff front Trump has also threatened to impose substantial additional tariffs on countries that do not remove digital taxes and related regulations that harm US tech firms. He also said he would slap 200% tariffs on China if Beijing does not export rare-earth magnets to the US. Traders remain cautious awaiting key 2Q GDP and CPI data this week.

Further in a letter posted on Truth Social he said he is removing Fed Governor Lisa Ford from her position amid accusations she made false statements on one of her mortgage agreements. Cook responded by saying Trump does not have the authority to fire her and she will not resign. She is the first black woman ever to serve on the Fed Res Board of Governors.

Morning all.

I'm getting pretty fed up with this nonsense of price increases of 5p & 10p on your daily shop. Bloody hell my local supermarket whacks prices up on a weekly basis by 5-10p! I don't have the exact details on many items, but I can tell you a ready cooked shepherd's pie in SBRY has gone up from 2:75 to over £4 in no time at all. My old school master said that was a lot more than 50%......

So...... do not believe the nonsense of prices going up

4-5% trotted out by the left wing BBC who to my certain knowledge have rarely bought anything from Iceland or the numerous small corner shops fighting for survival. They shop exclusively at the likes of Harrods, Selridges and Fortnum & Mason places who would not let me through the front door and I might add do not have my best interests in mind.

I'm sure all of you have horror stories of profiteering on a massive scale due to the incompetence of this Govt being able to keep in check supermarkets

'ripping off' the public. No wonder there is an outbreak of mass thievery going on in the High street. We have all seen Shoplifters getting a free pass to steal what they want knowing full well the police are arresting motorists for parking on double yellow lines round the corner. Door security will do nothing but observe as they waltz through the door whistling a happy tune.

Should I join those who wander round supermarkets picking and choosing their weekly shop and walking out the front door without a care of being stopped? Its crossed my mind...

.....Ok, only briefly as i think how easy it would be for me to slip the odd Mars bar into my pocket without paying. Knowing my luck I'd have Carter & Regan of the 'Sweeney' on my case and be banged up in no time at all.

US stocks ended lower on Monday as investors banked profits awaiting the latest Q nos from Ai chipmaker Nvidia. Fridays rally lifted the Dow to a record close of (45,632) up 6•4% ytd.

Nvidia the most talked about stock makes up about 8% of the S&P 500 value and from a mrkt participants standpoint their Q nos are extremely important as huge nos of Americans use index investment funds to save for retirement which will include Nvidia the bigest stock on the 500. Nvidia closed at $180 up 30% this year and reports latest nos today.

On the S&P 9 of 11 sectors dropped on a below average 14•2 bn shares traded versus the 20 day average of 17•2bn. The Dow posted only 4 gains out of 30, led up by Nvidia, Nike & Chevron while Merck, Coca Cola & Amgen propped up the losers board. Others reporting this week include Dell inc, Best Buy & Dollar General.

Economic data due this and next week include Personal consumption index, 2Q GDP and the official non farm payrolls. The yield on the 10yr rose to 4•29% late Friday. The current state of the US economy is characterised as being in a state of 'sluggish' growth.

In other late news Trump said he is firing Fed Res Gov Lisa Cook for possible infractions on her mortgage application form. Trump added he has no confidence in her integrity.

Morning all.

The big news from Asia this morning is the collapse of property giant Evergrande which has delisted from the HK stock exchange after more than 15 years of trading. It marks a milestone for what was once China's bigest real estate company with a value of $50bn and a shining example of China's economic miracle. Now all that remains is which creditors are paid and how much they can recoup in the bankruptcy process.

Other property companies face major problems as house prices are down around 30% and have led to massive 'layoffs' by hugely indebted developers. The property slump has been the bigest drag as the industry accounts for c.33% of the economy.

Asia is trading higher this morning following positive cues from Wall St on Friday due to an improved outlook for rate cuts which dealers are pricing at 85% the Fed will cut by 25bp in Sept.

In Sydney the ASX200 is nearing the 9000 level led by mining and techs, financials being the only weak spot. Oils are mostly better with Woodside Energy & Santos gaining over 1% each. Golds and Banks are also being sought after. Reece Ltd & EVT Ltd were the two bigest fallers down 16% & 15%. At the close the ASX200 had put on 5 at 8972.

In Tokyo the 225 opened on a bright note climbing over 450 as investors bought the market however traders soon took early profits sending the 225 back to opening levels. Autos, banks and exporters led the gainers while Tokyo Electric fell 3%. The 225 closed up 175 at 42,808 .

Elsewhere in Asia Taiwan closed markedly higher up 513 points, with HK gaining 450 in late pm trading. While NZ, Shanghai, SK, Malaysia & Indonesia are trading flat to slightly better Singapore is 20 points short of a record high 4283 in early afternoon trading.

Morning all.

I agree the tie up with the Australian Co may not develop into much. As people say 'cash is king' so am relaxed about holding a goodly sum in the bank which hopefully will be boosted when they agree a sum for the non strategic parts of MSi.

The company holds more cash than the recommended 6 months of operating expenses but I'm OK with that given we could have an acquisition lined up when we have sold the petrol stations etc....Decided to buy back in (don't like to hold shares i have no 'skin' in) so to speak. Could be an interesting few months leading up to the H/Yr update in early Dec.

The blue chip Dow index hit a record closing high as investors piled into stocks after Fed Chair Powell hinted at a rate cut in Sept. The Dow rose 846 to 45,632 with only 4 of the top 30 stocks losing on the session. The Dow surpassed it's last closing record of Dec '2024. Ten of the 11 sub sectors traded higher led by consumer discretionary the bigest gainer up 3•20%, while the Russell small caps surged 4% to a record close 1443 for the year.

US stocks have rebounded strongly from April lows when the Dow hit 38,170. A spate of strong earnings nos, optimism around trade deals and rate cuts have been some of the main drivers of the stock rally this year. Trump said on Thursday he had set a 2 wk time frame for assessing peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv. As of yesterday nothing had been arranged.

On the DJ top 30 board 4 of the 30 fell led down by P&G, Coca Cola & Walmart while topping the risers Caterpillar, Home Depot & GS. Among top movers computer giant Intel gained 10% on news the company had agreed to give the US Govt a 10% stake which would not grant governing or voting rights in the company. Coinbase jumped 6•5% as investors moved into crypto related stocks.

The USD fell against the pound, euro and yen as lower returns make the greenback less appealing to foreign investors. Vols on US exchanges were an average 17•08bn where the 500 posted 37 new 52wk highs & no new lows.

Morning all.

There's still too much 'fog' surrounding MSi to go back in despite the shares climbing as soon as sold. The EOS is a mystery as to what MSi brings to the table. I'm happy to stay away for the moment. Unfortunately dont expect any clarification from the board so a 'bird in the hand'....etc

Fed Chair Powell will speak to investors today amid lingering uncertainty regarding int rates. CME Groups FedWatch Tool indicates a 74% chance the Fed will lower rates by 25bp.

On the big board it was an erratic day for stocks trading in a 313 point range but closed off the days low. Just 7 of the top 30 gained led up by Merck, Chevron & UH. Heading down Walmart, IBM & Home Depot. The S&P closed off 26 for the 5th straight session. Best performer was Paramount Skydance Corp up 15% to $16:03. Worst was First Solar Inc down 7% at $192 undone by Trump's criticism of solar & wind power as unreliable and harmful for consumers and farmers.

On Wall St stocks recouped early losses the major averages climbing off their worst levels. On the big board 20 of the top 30 closed better led by Walmart

Travellers & Cat while Apple (off 2%), Amazon and UH declined.

US stock indexes ended the day mixed to lower but recovered early losses. Nvidia which slipped to $168 recovered to $176 and is the most watched stock on the street, will report Q nos next week.

Big retailers kept the wider mrkt in check. TJX climbed off day's low of $138 after $144 which topped analysts estimates and Lowe's stock price fell from $265 closing at $257 which was above forecasts. Target ($99) tumbled $7 as CEO Cornell plans to step down and La-Z-boy ($34) sank 12% after the furniture makers nos came up short.

All told the S&P fell 16 to 6396 despite delivering a 10% ytd return the index lags most other equity regions of the world. Mainly European and Asian mrkts helped by a weakening USD are up 26% & 20% in USD terms.

Morning all.

A broad sell off in tech on apprehension that enthusiasm surrounding Ai could be overdone after a report Nvidia is developing a new Ai chip for China sent big tech stocks tumbling. Nvidia fell $6 to $175 on bearish tech signals it's bigest one day drop in 4 months. Other tech fallers included Apple, Msoft & Cisco. Nvidia remains the bigest global company by mrkt capital valued at $4•283tn.

In an interview with The Verge a weekly tech show Sam Altman CEO of Open Ai said they are in a 'tech bubble' comparing it to mrkt conditions of the dotcom boom of the 90's. Alibaba co-founder Joe Tsai and Bridgwater Associates Ray Dalio have raised similar warnings.

Fed Chair Powell is scheduled to speak at the Jackson Hole Symposium which gets underway on Thursday. Traders expect a 25bp rate cut in Sept. BOA Global Research surveyed investors, 70% of whom expect a stagflationary environment in the coming months driven by weaker jobs data, high core inflation and a sharp rebound in producer prices. Stagflation occurs when prices and costs rise while the economy stagnates causing people's purchasing power to fall.

On the Dow big board 16 of the top 30 posted gains led by Home Depot, P&G and Coca Cola. Propping up the losers Nvidia, Boeing and Amazon. The S&P posted 13 new 52wk highs and 1 new low on the day.

Morning all.

Wall Street's indexes closed flat to mixed as investors waited for a raft of earnings reports from major retailers and the Fed Res annual meeting at Jackson Hole.

However the world were mostly interested in the 'high stakes' White House meeting between Zelensky, Trump and European leaders playing a supporting role. Little of note was reported outside of Trump calling Putin for 40 mins to arrange a tripartite meeting. Trump said a 'security blanket' will be provided by the European Union with 'coordination' by the US.

Outside of that details were sketchy particularly on the pressing question of Ukraine ceding 'ground' to Russia which would favour the aggressor. Yet Trump says the war will end on amicable terms. The Wall St journal warned Putins promises are worse than worthless.

On the markets investors cont to price in a 25bp cut in September and stocks in focus included Intel ($24) down 4% on news the Trump administration is in talks to take a 10% stake in the chipmaker. However in a vote of confidence in the chipmaker SoftBank is investing $2bn in the company. Dayforce ($68) the days big gainer jumped 26% after a report that private equity firm Thoma Bravo might acquire the human resources software firm.

Solar stocks SunRun ($16) & First Solar ($219) were the talk of markets on new tax rules less punitive than feared and major retailers Home Depot, Target, Walmart & Lowe's are set to report Q results this week which will go someway to show how the economy is coping with Trump tariffs and US household spend.

Meanwhile 2Q earnings season is winding down with most of the reports in, the results have been positive.

The 500 posted 9 new 52wk highs and 3 new lows while on the big board 16 companies made gains led up by UH, Cat & Cisco. Going down Amgen, Boeing & Sherwin Williams.

Morning all.

Despite a mixed finish on Wall on Friday, Asian mrkts are trading mostly higher this morning following positive news on the Trump/Putin talks and hopes the 3 year plus war will end soon. Trump and Putin have largely agreed the way forward and a meeting between Trump, Zelensky and European leaders is scheduled for today to agree the way forward via a 'security' guarantee.

Investors hope a positive outcome could streamline global trade as well as financial and commercial markets. This morning Tokyo is notably higher moving above the 43,750 level to new highs at the morning session close. The Nikkei 225 put on 380 points and is looking to clear 44,000 for the first time.

Elsewhere in Asia most mrkts are trading better taking cues from Tokyo though S.Korea, Taiwan & Singapore are all in the red on local factors. Hong Kong & Shanghai see strong buying from Govt sources, though much to everyone's surprise India has become the bigest exporter of smart phones to the US relegating China into 3rd place behind Vietnam (Samsung).

In Sydney the ASX200 regained early losses to trade up 16 at (8955) in late afternoon trading as major miners and oils trim early losses. Banks are sought and in currencies the aussie dollar trades at $0•652 to the greenback.

Morning all.

The S&P 500 settled down 18 to end the day at 6450 just off record high set yesterday. The Dow outperformed rising 35 to 44,946 thanks in part to UH stock rising 12% to $309 on news that Berkshire Hathaway had bought 5•4 m shares in the company worth $1•57bn. UH stock has been the worst perfomer on the big board, down 40% this year. Buffet previously owned UH stock in 2006 before selling out in 2010.

Of the DJI top 30 stocks 13 gained led by UH, Salesforce and Amgen, going down Cisco, 3M & Cat. A decline in chip stocks and weak consumer sentiment hurt the overall mrkt. Applied Materials fell 14%, VanEck Semiconductor lost 2% and Nvidia slipped 1%. Sunrun the mrkt leader in residential solar panel business saw its stock surge 33% to $14 after beating 2Q forecasts for revenues and profits.

So far the Ai boom and rate cuts are supporting investor sentiment. According to the University of Michigan consumer sentiment fell to 58•6 in August from 61•7 in July on inflation worries yet July retail sales rose 0•5%. As consumers cont to spend the Dow is up 6% ytd, the 500 up 10%, the NSDQ 13% but the R2 off 1% ytd.
