Asian mrkts have opened mostly up with gains across all regions. Investors await reports on US consumer and price inflation nos later this week which could indicate the path for bigger than expected interest rate cuts in Sept.

Sydney has opened slightly down in afternoon trading with the most watched ASX200 slipping below the 8850 level. Energy and financials are seeing sellers as do Banks, oils & techs. Miners are ahead c.2% but golds are mixed. Bigest gainer is 4DMedical surging 44% to AUD 2•24 after agreeing partnerships with leading global lung health Co's. In GBP terms 4DMedical is valued at c.£502m.

In Japan the shock news is PM Shigeru Ishiba is stepping down due to rifts within the ruling party but had no impact on mrkts. The Nikkei is trading significantly higher at the morning break amid upbeat domestic GDP nos (a current account surplus of 2•7tn yen). Near the close some late profit taking has trimmed gains to 650 points having been 820 higher earlier in the day.

Elsewhere across the region mrkts follow the trend set by Japan and of the 10 mrkts tracked only Singapore trades in the red. Most currencies in the region gained strength against a weak USD.

US stocks closed moderately lower on Friday after a weak jobs report cemented the case for the Fed to cut rates. Some believe the Fed may cut as much as 0•5% in Sept. Bond yields declined sharply to an April low and the non farm payrolls showed the US added just 22,000 jobs in August, well below consensus forecasts. US unemployment ticked up to 4•3% matching forecasts.

Shares in focus included Kenvue ($18:60) which fell 10% after the WSJ reported Health Secretary Robert Kennedy plans to announce that pregnant women's use of Tylenol is potentially linked to autism. You may remember the "Tylenol murders" when a series of poisonings due to drug capsule tampering in Chicago 1982 resulted in at least 7 deaths. J&J the maker of Tylenol spent over $100m to recall & relaunch Tylenol. Noone was ever charged or convicted of the poisonings.

Broadcom ($332) rose as much as $26 after upbeat 3 Q results and that Open Ai will make chips designed by it. Broadcom trades at a trailing P/E of 110 far exceeding the semi conductor average and outpacing Nvidia. Sceptics question whether it's value is justifiable having risen 44% this year.

On the big board 10 of the top 30 made gains led by UH, Amgen & Home Depot while JPMC, Nvidia & Chevron propped up the laggards. On the week the 500 gained 21 while the Dow fell 144. On a ytd basis the Dow is up 7% the 500 + 10% and the Nsdq 13% ahead. The Russell small caps are up 3%.

A second rate politician will get another chance to stir up trouble for the Tories from the back'benches aided by best buddy 'red' Jeremy whose main wish is to see us aligned with 'fat boy' Slim (gettit?) Idiot Starmer who has demonstrated how useless he is in fronting a Govt capable of running a corner shop will have another 3+ years to bankrupt the country, ably abetted by Rachel from Form 6 Removed (the dunces) when i was last at school.

It won't take them long as the country faces possibly the worst set of economic circumstances in many years. Zero growth, high taxation, crippling backdrop for employment, a High St in a non spending crisis and the Govt facing increasing borrowing costs to pay back the 'gnomes' of Zurich, the corner shops, you and me.

On Wall St stocks closed higher by the close with the major averages all showing strong moves to the upside and in particular the S&P 500 hit a new record high.

A deteriorating jobs landscape could push the Fed to cut rates for the first time this year in Sept after last months grim July jobs nos included massive downward revisions which prompted Trump to fire the head of the agency that compiles the data.

On the Dow 24/30 stocks posted gains led by Amazon, GS & 3MCo. Boeing, Amgen & Coca Cola propped up the laggards with Salesforce ($244) slumping 5% despite topping 2Q estimates. The stock is currently 30% down this year. After the mrkt closed Nvidia's Q report showed earnings & revenues topping forecasts. The stock fell 3% in after hours trading to $174. Not helped by Director Dawn Hudson selling 90,000 shares to net $15•4m.

Morning all.

Investors and traders remain confident that the Fed will cut interest rates by at least 25 basis points later this month. A report showed job openings in the US fell to their lowest level in 10 months as employers were advertising 7•2m job openings in July, fewer than most forecasts.

In late afternoon the big board was down 300 points before bottom fishers returned to force the market higher. Wall rallied strongly ending only 25 lower thanks to a rally in techs led by Apple, IBM & Google.

Macys the department store & owner of Bloomingdales shot up 21% after raising its Q2 annual revenue & sales forecasts. The stock easily beat expectations closing at $16:33. Thirteen of the Dow 30 closed better while Chevron, Amex & Boeing fell around 2% each.

US stocks fell yesterday but ended the session off lows in what is historically the worst trading month of the year. T/bill yields rose with the 30 year jumping 5 basis points to trade at 4•97% and at that level is typically viewed as a headwind for stocks.

Gold topped its all-time high trading around $3600 as investors face a key test of the August jobs report. Meanwhile a Tuesday economic update showed U.S. manufacturing contracted for the 6th straight month in August.

Nvidia led the declines among the 'Mag 7' stocks slipping $5 to $170 after pushing back against media reports its Ai chips were 'sold out'. On the Dow top 30 9 stocks gained led up by Merck, Boeing & McD while Nvidia, GS and Nike off $3 to $74 propped up the losers.

In late news Google rose $14 to a record close of $226 after a District Court Judge spared a break-up of the company in its Monopoly Case. The judge ruled Google will not have to sell its Chrome browser but will have to share data with rivals to boost on line competition.

Morning gents my local landlord tells me he is ordering more Guinness kegs than ever before. Noticeably by Women. Come the winter I'll be back on it.

Asian mrkts are trading mixed at the start of wk 36 after mostly negative cues from Wall St on Friday. The surprise of the week was a court ruling that Trump had overstepped his authority in imposing a series of tariffs including duties on China, Mexico and Canada. Trump has 2 weeks to respond but said his next stop will be the US Supreme Court.t

In Sydney the ASX200 is considerably lower hitting a days low of 8908, extending losses in the previous session led by iron ore miners, energy and techs. Gold is a bright spot at $3470. North Star Resources & Evolution Mining buck the downtrend gaining 4% while Newmont adds 2% and Resolute Mining jumps 5%.

Bigest gainer on the day RPMGlobal rockets up 23% after an agreement with CAT of a non binding proposal to acquire all shares and options for $5 a share. In pm trade the ASX200 has bounced off lows to trade 35 down an hour before close.

Tokyo is sharply lower at the morning break tumbling nearly 1000 points to 41835 before bargain hunters returned for the afternoon session. Weakness is across all sectors led by profit taking in tech. Amongst the major losers Advantest slumped 9%, Disco is off 7%, Socionext slipped 6% and Fukuawa Electric down 5%.

Motors are one of few bright spots this morning. The 225 is still way below its record close of 43,876 last seen in Aug'25.

Elsewhere in Asia Indonesia is off 2% while Singapore, SK & Taiwan are all in the loss column though HK & NZ are showing modest gains.

In Shanghai the Yuan (7•13) dropped to its lowest level in 7 weeks v the USD as the country seeks to cast itself as a global peace maker at Day 2 of the SCO summit of 20 foreign leaders gathered in Tianjin which also include Putin and Modi. Xi Jinping seeks to repair the strained relationship between India & China over the issue of cross border terrorism.

Good morning Roger. I Recently bought Bunzl & Diageo both doing well atm up (11% & 6%). Not usually the type of stocks i go for but both been clobbered this year.

So just off ytd lows seemed a good time to buy. Buffet owns stock in Diageo which looks a recovery play and Bunzl is the type of company he invests in....so fingers crossed.

Stocks fell on Friday to end the week with a small loss of 87 points but over the month gained a creditable 1414 points and is up 7% ytd. The (PCE) price index held steady at 2•6% in July above the Fed's 2% target, with the core reading that strips out food & energy rising slightly to 2•9%. The Fed uses the (PCE) price index as its primary forecasting tool.

The bad news is inflation is continuing to inch higher not what the Fed wants to see given pressure from Trump to cut rates more aggressively. In a further blow a US Appeals court has held that most tariffs issued by Trump are illegal. On a 7-4 decision the court rejected Trump's argument that tariffs were permitted under an emergency powers act calling them invalid as contrary to law.

On the Dow 16 of the top 30 gained on the session led by UH, Amazon & Merck while Caterpillar, Nvidia & 3MCo led the losers. Nvidia ended the week at $173•67 down $4 but still comfortably top of the bigest companies rankings table. Wall will be closed on Monday for the Labour Day holiday weekend.

Morning all.

The S&P 500 hit a new closing high yesterday closely followed by the DJI. Though the gains were modest they came after an upward revision to US 2Q GDP to 3•3% from 3•0%. Bumper 2Q nos from Nvidia whose stock was little changed at $180 pleased the mrkt despite a cloudy outlook for its China businesses and concerns Q3 nos will disappoint.

The DJI 30 has some catching up to do with the rest of the world after lagging in '25. However the 500 notched another record at (6502) and has gained 10% over the last 3 months mainly due to big tech out performance. Analysts have been recommending a 'stay home' policy which has worked out well for investors. Currently the 500 trades on a lofty p/e of 22x earnings so a lot of good news is priced in.

Of the Dow 30 top stocks 16 posted gains on the session led by Salesforce, Cisco and

Amex. Heading south P&G, Amgen & Merck. Key US inflation nos are due later today. Also the dollar is battling headwinds from worries about Fed independence as Trump continues his campaign to exerted more influence over monetary policy.

His on going row with Lisa Ford continues to make headlines on broadsheets and the financial pages. She has sued the Trump administration in an effort to overturn his attempt to fire her. No President has sought to fire a Fed Reserve Gov in the institutions 112 year history. So watch this space.

A LRT of 8968 shares at 1232 for a chunky £110,000 makes no difference to the sp these days. The jobbers are so full of stock they can afford to sit on there hands and do nothing.

Not exactly what ther'e in business for, but heh ain't it great when everything is going your way and your smiling all the way to the bank! Buys v Sells might cancel each other out but since when did that make a difference to sp quotes?

Well, not since the days of the much missed FT30 index which got dumped in '84 when the Yanks took over our markets and investors had to make a sea change in their investment decisions. We started using the ftse 100 as the 'go to' index and the FT30 was consigned to history. It had served us well since 1935.

Rolls Royce, Imps & GEC.,my best guesses. Owned stock in all of them at one time.

Well I was around for all of them so I'd guess (c).

I know what you mean Roger! I pretty much exist on beer and take aways these days as i can't be arsed with cooking. So I'm getting royally screwed!
