Wall St reacted negatively to news that Trump had announced another round of swingeing tariffs. He's putting 50% on copper imports which is expected to hit mining giants BHP & Rio Tinto who jointly own the Escondida mine in Chile the world's bigest producer of copper concentrates and cathodes. He also hinted at a potential 200% on pharma and an additional 10% on BRICS nations.
On a quiet session the Dow fell 165 with 12 stocks posting falls led by Walmart, JPMC & Nike while going up Chevron (top gainer), Amgen & UH. Big techs Apple $210 & Msoft $496 marked time. Both Apple & Msoft have been usurped as the world's bigest companies by Nvidia ($160) valued at $3•902tn. Since 1999 Nvidia's shares have gained 400,000,00%. Of the 10 largest global companies 8 are American, 1 Saudi Arabian and 1 Taiwanese.
Wall is gearing up for the Q2 earnings season next wk along with the Fed's June minutes for any hint of rate moves. Strong labour data last week largely quashed hopes of a rate cut in the coming months due to uncertainty over the inflationary impact. Trump pointed to reports from the Council of Economic Advisors that his tariffs had not pushed up inflation. However the full effects are yet to be seen.
