On Wall St stocks turned in a lack'lustre performance yesterday though the Nsdq reached a 3 month closing high of 21,768 still some 425 points short of its all-time best (22,222). Mrkts are expected to have a quiet summer. Since hitting its April low the 500 has climbed 20% led by a swift rebound in communication services, techs and consumer discretionary.
This week will see major data releases of May consumer prices on Wed & initial jobless claims on Thursday. Investors expect the Fed to keep rates u/c. Next week investor focus will shift to see if there are any signs of a pick up in inflation as Trump tariffs risk raising prices.
On the Dow, 13 companies posted gains led by Boeing, Amazon & Disney while Apple, Nike & Travellers led the fallers. In corporate news Apple ($201) fell 1% amid a lack of any Ai announcements from its WWDC event in Vegas. Quaalcomm ($155) gained 4% on its $2β’4bn acquisition of Alphawave but shares of Big Mack ($305) dipped after MS downgraded the fast food restaurant to 'equal weight' from 'overweight.' Amazon ($217) put on $4 after reporting it will invest $20bn in data centre infrastructure projects in Pennsylvania.
The S&P posted 16 new highs and 4 new lows on the day. Vols on US exchanges were light with 17β’1bn traded. All 3 major indexes remain below last year's closing highs but slightly up ytd. The Russell small caps are down 6% and have lagged the big caps for years.
