When you are showing a nice profit you can leave your profit in and take out your original stake is one way to look at it. When the dividend pays out it can be reinvested into RBS shares or in my case I may buy some Prudential as I like what they are doing. Yes reinvesting my £2000 or so of divs in RBS is one approach but I want to hedge my bets.

colti the markets that we are concerned here are cyclical however if you have all your monies in one share then you can go bust overnight if it dives out of hours say. I liked a small company, PSION and had some spare monies and invested £2500, and in the short term all appeared okay but then the share dropped and eventually I ended up with about £200, they were taken over and there was no boost to share price. Yes it can be put down to me not doing my own research, although I suspect many here are not either. Its long termers that are at risk the most because they can ignore warning signs to get out. I am at last listening and watching. My first job was in the head office of the Pru and a wise old guy said to take profits, but when I had money to invest this advice was forgotten. Those actively dealing I think are safer as they are inclined to take a profit whenever they can. Good luck to all on here.

My subject says it all. Until you lose a lot it can seem cautious but please don't forget to take profits and spread the risk. Back in 2008 I didn't believe it could go so wrong despite having seen it happen in the the 1970's and again in the late '80's. This is a message to anyone who may need to heed the advice.Thank god I still own a house.

Love_You as I see it markets are about people buying and selling. If there are a lot of buyers for say RBS, then it pushes up the sp whereas if more sellers down it comes until someone wants to buy. All markets follow this pattern as far as I can see. Just like Leather Lane market( don't know if it is still there!) price is not about real underlying value but instead about what buyers will pay on the day. When the market is quiet the stallholder will sell his product at a loss sometimes to get cash, his prices can be lower at the start of the week but higher nearer to the weekend when buyers return in numbers, still the same item being sold. It is a mistake to think that shares represent real underlying value, yes they do in part but much of any share price is sentiment. Hence shares can crash at almost anytime. If a change in the colour of our government is expected then investors will bolt from some shares and buy gold. A few more buyers today.

JABH I hope you are right however I get the impression RBS is not yet in favour and amongst the banks LLoyds is preferred to RBS as a share. RBS is still seen as a little risky, and needs to show a pattern of paying steadily increasing divs. Consequently in say 3 years from now the picture could be dramatically different, to our benefit.

colti during the last 3 years the markets have been anticipating the turnaround, it has been a long time coming and even now the warning signs are there. Hence we have most of the dividend as "special" which is not comforting. If the profits hold up for the next 3 years then I bet you 2p the sp will be above £3.

colti I'm inclined to believe the markets are logical. Take RBS it is much smaller than it was in 2007 as it has had to sell off a lot of investments at below what was book value. Now in 2019 the markets are not yet convinced that RBS is a well run bank and going to be profitable going forward, hence the sp is below what it should/could be. The markets look ahead. When RBS systems crash with the late rush of PPI then this only shows the markets that they were right. It seems to me that RBS needs to stay out of the spotlight and get on with presenting a well run business and then the sp will reflect that, and all being well we will see this banks shares at a premium.

Where are you all, more posts please. Can we hold on to the gain, even get to 190p.

colti, can understand your reaction, I simply do not act that quick much to my cost in the past. When the divs are paid out on 20th I expect the sp to rise as investors plough the monies back in as some on here have advocated. At this level I feel it is better to be in. I believe there is a chance that by the 20th it will be back to £2. Maybe just dreaming.

Hi colti precisely my thought. Is the bank being wholly truthful, surely all the provisions made to date have not all been paid out. It is as if RBS is trying to talk the sp down but it is still pleasing to see the rise. These last minutes claims could be people trying it on and perhaps likely to fail. Surely people with valid claims did not hold back until the last few days.

Or Strong Buy, maybe.
Having looked at this sp it has come from £30 to less than £2.50 in the last twelve months, this is what happened with RBS.
Strong talk of an election has now really messed things up for RBS in particular.

Can I offer a contrary view, there is likely to come a point where selling off the gov. holdings sees an immediate rise in the sp as investors will gain confidence and buy more. At the moment the sp is at a false low and if large investors should decide there are no more undue risks with RBS then there could be a price surge.

In the next 3 years it ought to slowly get to £5 if no more bad news from RBS, and rather think a no deal will not have a big impact on this bank, although I want a deal to avoid annoying restrictions.

With the mess of Brexit being highlighted this morning it seemed to me that this week would be bumpy and not lead to an immediate rise. Could it be that the sp has been written down so much that a small rise is a safe bet? Someone help me to understand.

Not sure who is missing the point? My bank branch closed and I very soon I understood I did not need to go to a branch or need it. I still have a cheque book but don't use it, the world has changed. I use credit card for all shopping, household bills are paid by direct debit, salary(pensions in my case) get paid into bank account, why would i use a bank branch. Online banking is there when I want it which is a win win as it means I know what is happening and the bank saves on staff and premises costs. The banks used to have mobile branches going out to villages, but they are not needed in 2019. These new branches you mention will start closing within 5 years, as no one needs them. Five years ago shops complained of the cost of accepting credit cards on small transactions but in 2019 some shops wont accept cash as it is costly for them to process; with credit cards they don't have to cash up at the end of the day. Even Big Issue sellers have been given equipment to allow them to take plastic, who would ever expected that?!

RBS needs to raise its profile, and get ahead of the game. I have not found a need to go into a bank branch for months, why are they keeping these? The world has moved on. The people at the top need to mystery shop and see what is going on talk to customers and staff. Even have coffee mornings with a combination of customers and staff to discover what is needed. RBS comes well down in surveys of customer service, why??
