As a young man working in a junior role for the Conservative Party, I once collected Margaret Thatcher from Birmingham New Street for a meeting in Coventry. As she walked into the hall, a group of Socialist Workers shouted abuse at her. Back in my small Mazda, I said how awful it was. She gave me a look I’ll never forget and said, “My dear, I love it. When they shout and scream, I know they’re frightened.”
Today’s politicians want to be loved by everyone. They avoid any decision that might cost them office, which is why we remain stuck—caught in the grip of a growing dependency culture and a political class unwilling to confront illegal immigration. Nothing will change, and any attempt at fiscal sanity will spark unrest. Decades of Tory and Labour socialism have left us here. And the NHS? Too big to fail, so money will keep pouring in with no real effect.
