@froginthebogg The other point I would make is that an investment in a tracker is for passive investors. Whereas an investment in an individual stock is for proactive investors. Horses for courses and all that. Each to their own.

@froginthebogg You miss my point. If you buy ANY stock at the right price, then it's almost always 'money in the bank' For example, I purchased the bulk of my Prudential Plc stock at £6.01, and I added at circa £6.05 a couple of weeks back.

If I simply invested in teh FTSE100 tracker fund, the same rule applies. If I invest at a when the FTSE100 tracker is on a high, I may make 2% in 20 years, or even -15% in 20 years. Most investors think, it's all about time in the market. Not true. It's always about the buy price...what's the rule...buy low sell high...it works every time!

@Rock200 You are right to be confident in Capita's RNS pre-close trading update on 17 December. What I like about AH is that there will be no unknowns, he calls it as it is. He is heavilly into AI and IT and knows that is the foundation for the road forward i.e in terms of service excellence, margins and profits. The fact that the sale of Capita One has meant that net debt is minimal definately works in Capita's favour.

The fact is that Capita is not on the radar of a high percentage of investors and day traders. When the Capita RNS comes out on 17 December, and shows that steady progress has been made in terms of margins, profits and a huge decline in net debt...the share price will jump to probably around 21-22p. At that point, will Capita shareholder sell out for chump change profit? Or will Capita shareholders sit tight and wait for the major prize in mid March at the end of year Capita results. That is the question... Thoughts, anyone...?

Icecool you have just gone up in my estimation.

That said, I have to raise one poit you made and counter it. The Wood Group share price dropped by over 60% in one day, and there was no way this was due to the sell off by a lone institutional investor. No way, no how. Do the math. The fact is that the CEO's RNS alterted stakeholders and shareholders alike that there was a major issue and the lack of detail and timeliness around the review made many shareholders sell up and walk away...or more likley run for the hills. But all of that now is ancient history...

Obviously, Wood Group will drop out of the FTSE250 and into the depths of the small caps on Tuesday, and this will be confirmed on Wednesday next week. The Wood Group share price will fall. This is a given. Personally I plan to wait for the dust to settle - probably 3 days after the demotion - and then look to add, but only if the stars align. If not, I'll sell out, as Wood Group is a gamble at the moment - no doubt about it.

I just come back to how easy would it be for the CEO to issue an RNS statement (even if only mildly positive) to calm the situation and show a clear path forward...? That is leadership.

@Icecool Firstly you need to change your name to Redhot...you certainly do get very hot under the old blue collar dear chap. I think the fact you're from Aberdeen probably explains your outburst...there are a lot of red-necks in Abderdeen.

Secondly, I am an investor in Wood Group. If you did your research you would know from my previous posts that I have invested £90,000 at 52p, so sorry to say chum - but you got that wrong too.

Thirdly, I know you think the CEO is wonderful that much is clear. I have a different view. Accept it or not. Frankly old chap I don't give a damn.

Fourthly, The CEO should not teat employee shareholders any differently from anyone else. It's a two-tier CEO who treats employee and 'other' shareholder differentlyt at Wood Group...if I knew that I would never have invested. I bet you're a Labour voter, so you feel right at home with your Tow-Tier CEO and your Two-Tier Keir! Lol

@Paul30661 The Aviva offer was made on 19 November. At that time, the offer equated to a Direct Line share price of £2.50. Of course, the Aviva share price will bob about, so the £2.50 will fluctuate somewhat, depending on share price movement on the day.

If the CEO of Wood Group doesn't need to say anything, why did he need to say 'something' to reassure the EMPLOYEE shareholders...? i.e the letter that was posted on this WG discussion board, which addressed only to employee shareholders (damn the rest of us 'normal' shareholders), which started thus: "All," (Good grief! What a way to start, "Dear valued employee shreholder" would have been far nicer...especially given the circumstances!).

I take it Icecool that you think the CEO if Wood Group is a decent and competent enough fellow. Well, I (and no doubt all the other shareholders who have already dumped the WG stock) beg to differ. My vote is for Mildred the Office Cleaner as CEO of Wood Group. I'm sure she'll 'clean up the mess'...er, no pun actually intended, but anyway, there you have it!

@Aimless I know you like to follow the advice of the shorts and when they enter you leave the stock you're invest in. However, the shorts at Direct Line have been badly burnt (includes one of your favourites: Qube). Take note.

While JO has now banked a sizeable profit from Direct Line (sold at exactly £2.26p at about 11.30am today), the shorts have packed their bags and sprinted through the back door. Boo hoo..whahhhahhhaaa. Lol

The same will happen to anyone dumb enough to short Capita. JO has spoken.

@Icecool. Maybe you should apply for the job as CEO of Wood Group - you'd certainly help calm some nerves with your talk of 'math and logic', which is more than the current CEO has done. If you won't apply, I'm still trying to persuade Mildred the Office Cleaner to apply...

Many day-traders have made lots of cash on the way down with the dead cat bounces etc. Myself included (and I don't consider myself a day-trader, but when in Rome...). Unfortunately, the Wood Group share price is where it is, and the fact is that it will sink lower when it drops out of the FTSE250. No thanks to the silent CEO and BOD at Wood Group who are still sitting in their office chairs staring at their belly buttons.

@alex621. Agreed. When you look at it Direct Line's current share price of circa £2.24 it's only a few pence above where it was this time last year.

I expect the Direct Line share price to slowly rise between AM today (i.e. from the open price of £2.15 at AM today), Friday and Monday as news of Aviva's offer sinks in and attracks further smart and savy investors for the rise; institutional investors put pressure on the BOD of Direct Line to open the door to discssions with Aviva (behind the scenes right now); and eventually the BOD of Direct Line will accept and recommend a 'fair offer' (anywhere from £2.85 to £3.00, which is more in line with the long-term value). Aviva knows this bolt-on business will be a winner for them for many, many years to come - so will strike again soon (to avoid a bidding war with another interested party) with a revised 'fair offer'. IMO

@TinkerT Unlike Ageas (Belgian based insurance company), Aviva (UK based insurance compnay) is different.

Amanda at Aviva knows Direct Line is an easy and natural fit - the synergies and cost efficiencies are immense. I think teh BOD at Direct will have to accept and recommend Aviva's second (maybe third) 'fair offer' in due course, due to immense pressure from institutional shareholders working behind the scenes right now.

Aviva (with Direct Line locked in) will become bigger, better, and stronger. No doubt about that.

You may claim to be an investor in Aviva, but you have never made a post on the Aviva discussion board... Interesting. Anyway, take a look at Direct Line's share price over the last 5 years. If Aviva made a second and final offer of a mere £2.55 (which is way less than the long-term value of Direct Line), then it will be Direct Line who walk away (not Amanda at Aviva). Aviva are not stupid, they will offer Direct Line £2.85 to £3.00 as that represents fair value. Anything less is wishful thinking. IMO

@Ellltelinv I am not your personal researcher or advisor. I don't know why you keep ramping Wood Group when you should know it is about to fall from the FTSE250 to the small caps, and the share price will drop like a stone. The market is never wrong. All the 'wishful thinking' in the world won't change that. I would say you must be quite new to the world of investment. Either way, I'm not here to hold your hand. DYOR

Who wants to look at offers just before Christmas? No one.

The reason I mentioned another Aviva offer could arrive as early as next week is two-fold...

In Aviva's RNS they mentioned they want a quick and quiet acceptance with minimal disruption to the business i.e. offer accepted ASAP. It's a fair and reaonable offer, but not yet a great offer. Not only that, Aviva would not want to wait and run the real risk of entering into a bidding war with another party for Direct Line. Strike first, strike hard and all that.

That said either you or I know when the next offer will be made (anymore than we knew the first offer had been made on 19 November). However, I think we can both agree that a second offer will be made in due course. Either way, as Direct Line shareholders, we both win! Lol
