Indepth didn't the regal acquision happen in 2018? Surely this money would not still be being shown in retained earnings for year ending Dec 19 if it had been spent? I was under the impression when companies are loss making they often use retained earnings as a short term (not ideal) measure to keep things going.

They have 2.6 billion in retained earnings, the interest payment in 2019 was 541 million, so it would seem to they can meet it for a while even if they were to make small losses, which seems unlikely as they are consistently profitable.

I imagine this would only apply to UK cineworld furloughed workers? However if other countries did similar schemes would be quite beneficial...as cineworld has around 37k staff around the world say that 30k of them were furloughed, if other countries also applied a similar scheme this would mean a payment of £30 million just for reopening which is better than a kick in the teeth

The sp moves mostly based on cases and deaths, how did it get up to £1 in the first place with no vaccine in sight? Basically positive sentiment from falling cases and deaths in Europe and Eastern US, it's not now dropped again since Western and Southern US, once these recede I imagine it will go back. People aren't holding out on waiting for a vaccine as we've already been told one might never materialize, people will just get on with their lives and cases and deaths will have the biggest impact on sentiment.
Also the reason places like pubs have not done as well since re-opening is down to people being put off by the controls and restrictions in place. Cinemas will have relatively minor restrictions and will for the most part feel like a normal trip to the cinema.

Akorn if you wait until there is a "good" time to invest, i.e a vaccine found, the price will no longer be cheap. Unless a catastrophe happens then the price will obviously have been crawling up both when vaccine trials are near and cases have dropped in the USA and with cineworld reopened. You cant have your cake and eat it. The time your planning to move back to this or other leisure stocks will be the same time as everyone else, hence it will no longer be cheap.

Khaiser I guess some increase was inevitable with the number of cases. It's also true though that the average age of new cases is 15 years younger and we've got better at treating it so it shouldn't lead to as many deaths as previously. Have to be patient and wait for the genuine plateau. Markets are forward looking so when they sense this things should improve.

This might sound blinkered but atleast a lot of key US states are now having their cases at the same time. Would be more awkward for re-opening if it was just Florida now, then Cali got hit in one month, then Texas the month after etc.

What's frustrating was having previously being patient and waiting for the UK to improve it's position which now is doing very well, we now have to patient and wait for the rest of US to go through their phase of it due to cineworld being tied to it. On the other hand if it wasn't for the Southern and Western US having their spike delayed until after ours and Eastern US there wouldn't have been this opportunity again to buy this share so cheap.

Good post Taziz, I also bought in at a pound thinking it would only go up! Luckily averaged down recently to 68p. You're right about a lot of stocks going down at the same time. Other stocks I am in - NRR, Hyve Group and Carnival also all started to go down from around that date a month back, shows how crucial the US market is to everything. (Though NRR was probably more down the midyear statement showing tenants were barely paying rent).

The movie "the big short" is about a guy who shorts the housing market before the 2008 collapse...he bet it would collapse so he made millions. It was very high risk though, he had to make margin payments for a long while as it kept increasing before it finally did actually collapse.
I believe I read he tried to short SMT or Tesla around 6 months ago, but obv it didn't work out that time and he ended up paying a lot and cancelling it.

There's also a lot of people who have been collected furlough payments and forced to save against their will who will now be looking to spend again

Makes your wonder...should the UK cineworld open more quickly? Obv it was waiting for the blockbusters and US but you could argue it should make full use of the VAT cut. Plus you can have people on part time furlough so wouldn't have to committ all the workers...could show things like parasite which seemed to be doing well.

But you're right it's hard to know yet whether or not they'd be worse without the heat
