I noticed Chris Whitty appeared to say on Weds that the outbreak was probably in retreat before the lockdown happened, was surprised this didn't make bigger news.

To be fair 7th or 14th Aug in the US is just a one or 2 week added delay...that would be good news.

US cases have stayed below the recent high point for the 5th day in a row. 15th/16th and 17th were all higher than the last 5 days. A lot of States looking better though California still rising.

I was just thinking it seems the choices for films to show is either new films or old classics but presumably when cineworld was shut they must have had a number of films halfway through their cinema life cycles..can these not just be put on again or have they gone to vod etc?

Great news, hopefully it gets officially confirmed some point, makes sense to make full use of the vat cut. Still wonder if Unhinged will we out on the opening...will be good that gyms and pools are opening on the 25th and bowling alleys from 1st Aug, so people should slowly get back out for leisure.

A lot of these factors make all equity investments look a bad move...and saving accounts pay barely anything in interest, so arguably going by these factors we should just stay in cash until there is a good time to invest, but by this time shares won't be as cheap anymore.

Cases in Texas have not risen for 6 days, in Florida for 5 days, in Arizona the last 14 days (and falling slightly now the last week), California still rising slightly but less sharply.
It's a bit early to tell but if it continues this way then should start looking good next week. As I said before I don't believe deaths will rise much. With a 14 day lag deaths are currently reflecting the cases as 7th July, these cases are about 225 percent as high as the cases were before the uptick in the South and West yet deaths only gone up about 40 percent from the previous death amount before uptick in south and west.
The present day cases which may have peaked are at 275 percent of how they were before the new uptick. Therefore I believe deaths will likely only have a modest uptick from here.

Actually maybe not quite that simple coz they'd be increased depreciation expense, but overall the change is in the presentation of the accounts rather than the fundamentals of the business.

The interest payment will go up but the expense payment goes down, so makes little difference to profit overall.

But this is from the accounting change of the operating leases coming onto the balance sheet. Not sure it's right to frame it as debt, when effectively the operating leases are rent payments, the same expenses as before but now companies have to put these on the balance sheet as both an asset and liability rather than simply an expense on the profit and loss.

That's great news! So Unhinged might hopefully be out on the 31st?

Gyms, bowling alleys and pools re-opening at the end of this month will bring back leisure footfall, not that footfall I think has that much effect on cinema as mostly people plan it in advance. Transport use has been increasing each weekend even if typical rush hour transport is flat. Probably indicating people are more confident to get out and do things, even if they are currently telling their bosses they are not comfortable with going into the office to work.
There might be people working from home long term but I think this would have negligible effect on cinema, might even make people want to get out more for leisure to compensate.

The vaccine is obviously good news, but from the markets point of views, one has to remember people are just as worried or even more worried about how governments respond to covid as covid itself. A lot of people are afraid of over-zealous lockdowns even if this fear doesn't make the news that much. A lot of people criticizing Florida and Texas for opening but their deaths per capita are still very low compared to a lot of places (which is probably why it's spiking there).
Unforuntaely whilst a vaccine is good news, it perhaps puts pressure on governments not to open up and business' not to open up because they will be accused by a hysterical media of "killing" people when we can now wait for a vaccine even if this is months away, with no certainty even then and our economy can not afford this.

Thinking about it some of the market might be hoping for herd immunity via t cells...and encouraged by places like Sweden when deaths have gone down without locking down...they have 10 million people and only 70 have died under 50 (mostly with underlying health conditions). This is despite Stockholm have 2.6 times the density of NYC.
I only say this because, strangely, a vaccine might be taken as bad news, as politically it encourages a lock-down and wait for a vaccine approach instead of get on with ours lives approach. (don't mean this to be too political). It is eye-catching though that more people have died aged over 100 than under 30...how long can you keep telling younger people to stay home under these circumstances?

Not much movement in the ftse, perhaps the market have decided that the world is economically screwed.

But seperately from the vaccine it looks like there is now a new treatment that significantly reduces the need for intensive care, I thought this should be huge news..and big for the markets.

The markets aren't responding to the treatment news like one might expect.
