No, that's not correct. You misunderstand the role of a Clinical Research Nurse and what is involved in their work. It is A LOT MORE than taking sputum samples. Typically a clinical research nurse will be responsible for the day-to-day management of respiratory research trials, they take part in all aspects of respiratory care & clinical trials, including spirometry, phlebotomy, ECGs, observations, and history taking. There is also the core research side of the job which often includes contributing to the identification of research strategies, running database reports, analysing and reporting on information gathered during the trial/study, etc.
An looking at Synairgen Pedro's job specifically, he is listed on Linkedin as "Co-Investigator on the UNIVERSAL Study". He says this role specifically involves "development of research study protocols, study documents, including the training materials.
Act as a representative for the company on research related meetings (e.g. contracts), discussions and presentations.
Provide training to research personnel and research sites (e.g. Site Initiation Visits).
Act as a site co-ordinator and team leader for the companyβs clinical research studies.
Involved in data monitoring, project management and assisting data analysis.
Liaise with regulatory authorities (e.g. Human Tissue Authority, MHRA, Research Ethics Committee) for submissions, approvals and ensuring that all research activity is performed according to Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
Development and maintenance of Standard Operational Procedures, clinical or non-clinical.
Assist in the development, writing and review of research publications (e.g. manuscripts, articles, posters).
Perform audits and inspections whenever requested or required, ensuring quality assurance.
You can appreciate then that is is much much more than taking sputum samples. There is a LOT more to the clinical research nursing role involvement in Universal than you state.
