RE: Peace in Ukraine18 Jun 2022 09:00
I am no fan of Putin but will say this. Sanctions are like a gun that fires in both directions, hitting the assailant and the shooter, both parties are getting hurt.
Europe buys gas from Russia, US says stop buying gas from Russia and you will hurt Putin. Does not affect the US.
Europe buys oil from Russia, US says stop buying oil from Russia and you will hurt Putin. Does not affect the US.
In all theses cases (and other examples, grain, wheat, sunflower oil) Europe and other countries pay the price too.
The US tells us what to do and we end up paying the price, America has it's own oil, gas, wheat, grains so pretty much insulated from any sanction effects.
See where I'm going with this?
Also, majority of Russians have very little anyway, so threatening to take away very little makes no real difference to them.
I saw a news clip and they asked ordinary people what would they do now, they said, nothing! We had nothing, we will go back to having nothing.
I do not condone Putin's behaviour but this has all the signs of a break up of Ukraine, much like the Yugoslavia in the 90's.
