The oil tankers are £30.4m each. I have estimated Phulbari to be worth £1m/day in savings apart from cheaper input cost of coal. The tankers have to be paid for and affordable power has always been the driver for output increase for industry. The GL has to come soon.

" I think heavy goods like coal will be catered for-the state of the roads could not cope with that and why not use all the rivers?

The geopolitics is very good for these two in that their relationship is one of helping their peoples. China has tried to steal IP from the west but generally with a junior partner with no threat of trade or land grabbing warfare there can be big mutual benefit.

This partnership seems to fall into the cooperative category and an example of BRI at its best. Phulbari has required parameters to be developed to maximise the cooperation by setting the exchange rate rules(part of this summit) so a depreciating Taka does not effect the huge balance of trade imbalance ie Bangladesh cannot pay for BRI with a depreciated currency. The dividend for China is only there if Bangladesh succeeds.

GCM investors have drawn a line from February and base the investment on current news plus Xi and Hasina are getting on and would like to see progress soon plus China has been building plenty of coal fired power plants so geared for action and pro coal for themselves if not Bangladesh.

What do you think is the best security for all the soft loans. Coal might be a good one. There will be no distraction from the summit agenda before the visit but it wouldn't be possible without a visible payback. The infrastructure and power projects will require energy to build putting pressure on other uses where they expect businesses to expand. Most coal is used for business and needs to be in constant supply.

Lack of FDI because of power cuts may suit China to promote their initiatives but they will know coal is a key to outage reduction at least cost, and they can always cart the surplus off to their stations in lieu of payment.

Are they really going to have this laid out prior to the China visit?

I think the country is looking forward to the GL. Quid pro quo for the China agreement next week.
