Dubhlinn, sadly this is a Green Party enhanced hot mess. And FF & FG, have limited options or face an early election.
And for the record, I have cut my personal CO2 output by ~80% in the last 1-2 years, ie, 2050 targets ~achieved.
The island of Ireland seems to have only 1 GW or 1,000 MW of capacity from 2 interconnections to the island of Britain. The future "French Connection" will add 700MW in 2026 at the earliest, ie, 1,700 MW maximum by ~2026.
Today, we have near 5,000 MW of wind energy, mostly onshore & plans for massive off-shore expansion by 2030.
What will happen with 5,000 MW of additional solar energy, on a windy & sunny day between 2025-2030 ?
We will have to curtail from 20-100% of the wind energy or maybe better still, re-educate the All Ireland population to use the energy, when its most freely available. I suggest half-price for peak energy generation periods, might help.
As for the Irish electricity network being able to handle all this extra power, it will surely take many years & cost several € billions to upgrade the network & if Minister Ryan achieves his dreams, we would need maybe 10-20 GW of connectors to Britan & Europe & many € billions more in interconnector investments.
So now, Irish electricity grid consumers must pay for the standard electricity grid + oil back up + gas back up + coal back up + hydro back up + turf back up + plus the onshore wind grid+ the offshore wind grid + the solar grid + the international connections grid + the electric car recharge grids + the biogas grid + lithium battery back-up grids & the future Hydrogen/Ammonia grid, etc, etc.
My tiny suggestions to ease energy cost suffering for many, is to offer free low energy light bulbs to all, €100 vouchers for low energy major appliances & € 50 vouchers for minor appliances, thermal underwear & energy educational classes for all school kids.
And I know, living in the south of France helps, but my October energy bill was € 22.
GLA, DONALB
PS - If Minister Ryan was in any way honest about global climate change goals, he would push for 5GW of Irish solar development in the Middle East, where the investment doubles & the CO2 halves.
